C., Thursday, December 22, 1966 Church paper editor speaks to Presbyterians A crowd of concerned Presbyterians from the four counties of South Carolina Presbytery met Thursday niji'ht in the new Haitness-Thornwell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Clinton to hear Dr. G. Aiken Taylor, editor of the Presby terian Journal. Sneaking at the request of the group on the differences of opinion in the church today, Dr. Taylor point ed out that differences of opin ion are an accepted fact of ev ery other human endeavor. There is one issue, he said which is being debated more than any other within the churches in our day and this is the mission of the church. Two groups, whom Dr. Taylor de scribed as equally sincere in dedication to their belief, hold views whose differences on this point have been expressed in wide-ranging controversies re garding social, economic and political matters. “One faction,” Dr. Taylor said, “considers that as Christ ians we have an obligation be fore God to bring a message re lated to fundamental human need, and with it change men’s lives; while to others the health, wealth and happiness from all your friends at. . . (Sunphoto) church is a society of persons which exists for the purpose of having a beneficial effect on our world and our society.” “John Calvin, the great Pith century reformer, has been widely described as a man whose faith encompassed strong civic and social concerns,” said Dr. Taylor, “which is very true, but in hundreds of his sermons in Latin and French no mention is made about the con duct of civic affairs or any particular social concern which he held.” The speaker described this difference of belief as to the mission of the church as a widespread feature of church life today and fundamental to the concern with such matters as The National Council of Churches. The Presbyterian Journal which Dr. Taylor edits was de scribed by local Presbyterians as the fastest-growing publica tion of the denomination, and the one which carries more news about matters within the church. A similar meeting will be announced for some time in January. A graduate of Presbyterian College and Columbia Semin ary, Dr. Taylor served as a World War II infantry officer and was awarded the Ph.D. de- gree by Duke University for studies in the teaching of John Calvin. He is the son of Mrs. Julia Pratt Taylor of Clinton. Nursing home policy outlined The following statement con cerning the Jesse Frank Hawk ins Nursing Home was submit ted for publication by Robert C.
