Church paper
editor speaks to
Presbyterians
A crowd of concerned
Presbyterians from the four
counties of South Carolina
Presbytery met Thursday niji'ht
in the new Haitness-Thornwell
Memorial Presbyterian Church
in Clinton to hear Dr. G. Aiken
Taylor, editor of the Presby
terian Journal. Sneaking at the
request of the group on the
differences of opinion in the
church today, Dr. Taylor point
ed out that differences of opin
ion are an accepted fact of ev
ery other human endeavor.
There is one issue, he said
which is being debated more
than any other within the
churches in our day and this is
the mission of the church. Two
groups, whom Dr. Taylor de
scribed as equally sincere in
dedication to their belief, hold
views whose differences on this
point have been expressed in
wide-ranging controversies re
garding social, economic and
political matters.
“One faction,” Dr. Taylor
said, “considers that as Christ
ians we have an obligation be
fore God to bring a message re
lated to fundamental human
need, and with it change men’s
lives; while to others the
health, wealth and happiness
from all your friends at. . .

church is a society of persons
which exists for the purpose of
having a beneficial effect on
our world and our society.”
“John Calvin, the great Pith
century reformer, has been
widely described as a man
whose faith encompassed strong
civic and social concerns,” said
Dr. Taylor, “which is very
true, but in hundreds of his
sermons in Latin and French no
mention is made about the con
duct of civic affairs or any
particular social concern which
he held.”
The speaker described this
difference of belief as to the
mission of the church as a
widespread feature of church
life today and fundamental to
the concern with such matters
as The National Council of
Churches.
The Presbyterian Journal
which Dr. Taylor edits was de
scribed by local Presbyterians
as the fastest-growing publica
tion of the denomination, and
the one which carries more
news about matters within the
church. A similar meeting will
be announced for some time in
January.
A graduate of Presbyterian
College and Columbia Semin
ary, Dr. Taylor served as a
World War II infantry officer
and was awarded the Ph.D. de-
gree by Duke University for
studies in the teaching of John
Calvin. He is the son of Mrs.
Julia Pratt Taylor of Clinton.

Lest we lose sight of the true
meaning of Christmas,
wouldn't it be well at this time
to rededicate ourselves to the
teachings of Christ? '
May each of us maintain the
true spirit of Christmas
in the days to come —
Best Wishes to all our friends.
