Enemies, meet ing under the mistletoe, were ex pected to embrace and declare a truce. Roman youngsters prob ably came up with the kissing idea. Best Card The most popular Christinas card is neither sick nor slick, hut rather informal. These cards underplay sentiment and have whimsical, sometimes lightly tender cover drawings. Small informal cards appeared in 10(*2. l arger ones are avail able this year for senders who want to write their own newsy note to each recipient. MECHANICAL TOYS The first crude mechanical toys appeared as early as 1000 A D. They were first equipped with clockwork in 1072 by the toy- makers of Nuremberg, Germany, already famous for their dolls. A French sailor who had fought the losing battle of Trafalfar with Napoleon was the unlikely pio neer of mass-produced clockwork toys.
