“anb on eartf) peace, goob Pull totoarb men”
“let us pray that strength and courage abundant be given to
all who work for a world of reason and understanding — that
the good that lies in every man's heart may day by day be
magnified —
that men will come to see more clearly not that which divides
them, but that which unites them —
that each hour may bring us closer to final victory, not of nation
over nation, but of man over his own evils and weaknesses —
that the true Spirit of this Christmas Season, its joys, its beauty,
its hope, and above all its abiding faith, may live among us —
that the blessings of pecce be ours, the peace to build and grow,
to live in harmony and sympathy with others, and to plan for
the future with confidence".

PEACE SYMBOL
Modern youth may never give
it a thought, but the custom of
kissing under the mistletoe sup
posedly began with the Romans,
who considered the mistletoe a
symbol of peace. Enemies, meet
ing under the mistletoe, were ex
pected to embrace and declare a
truce. Roman youngsters prob
ably came up with the kissing
idea.
Best Card
The most popular Christinas
card is neither sick nor slick,
hut rather informal. These
cards underplay sentiment and
have whimsical, sometimes
lightly tender cover drawings.
Small informal cards appeared
in 10(*2. l arger ones are avail
able this year for senders who
want to write their own newsy
note to each recipient.
MECHANICAL TOYS
The first crude mechanical toys
appeared as early as 1000 A D.
They were first equipped with
clockwork in 1072 by the toy-
makers of Nuremberg, Germany,
already famous for their dolls. A
French sailor who had fought
the losing battle of Trafalfar with
Napoleon was the unlikely pio
neer of mass-produced clockwork
toys.
