THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1961 THE NEWBERRY SUN, NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA PAGE Are Presented At Dance Zone Meeting Of Auxiliary Well Attended The Zone One meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary, De partment of South Carolina, was held in the Fellowship Hall of Central Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 30. About 65 members and officers, representing Greenville, Pickens, Oconee, Anderson, Laurens, Abbe ville, Greenwood, McCormick, Sa luda, Edgefield, Aiken and New berry counties attended. National, state and district officers were in attendance. Mrs. Ray Schumpert and Mrs. W. H. Davis tnet the guests. Miss Sudie Dennis and Miss Sadie Bowers had charge of registration, and Mrs. James P. Fulp served coffee. Mrs. C. A. Dufford Sr., presi dent of the Local unit, called the meeting to order.. COUNTS The fall dance of the Newberry Cotillion Club was held Saturday •evening, December 2, at the New berry Country Club at which lime three debutantes were presented. They were Miss Brenda Sally Truett, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Fuller Alexander Truett; Miss Mary Waties Pope, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Harrington Pope and Miss Lisa Ann Lominack, daughter of Mrs. Emerson Jones and the late Dr. Reyburn W. Lominack. The ballroom of the Club was attractively decorated. Soft white material cascaded from above the crystal chandelier to the wall where it was fastened at ceiling length with magnolia leaves. Crescent shaped designs of mag nolia foliage and long gold se- quined bells were placed on the Srranite walls of the chimneys at either end of the room. The mantles held white candles with :green foliage at the base, and burning logs in the fireplace cast a soft glow over the ballroom scene. The guests were received by John F. Clarkson, President of the Cotillion, and Mrs. Clarkson; Her- schel A. Kemper, Vice President, and Mrs. Kemper; John R. Frazier and Mrs. Frazier and the debu tantes who carried crescent bou quets of Debutante Camellias, miniature ivy and pink net with punk velvet ribbon falling to the N Orchestra furnished the music, j hemline of their gowrs. j In addition to the above officers Miss Truett and Miss Pope danced the first dance with cheir fathers and Miss Lominack with her step father. They were joined by their escorts, Miss Truett with Robert Derrick of Anderson; Miss Pope with Walton McLeod of Wal- terbcro and Miss Lominack with Robert Bruner III of Newberry. Following the fourth card dance, dinner was served. Seated at the President’s table were the officers and their wives, the debutantes and their escorts. The table was centered with an arrangement of pink and cerise carnations in a silver bowl flank ed by white candles in silver can delabra. The other tables were decorated with white candles, pink camellias and gold pittesporum leaves. After dinner the guests return ed to the ball room, where coffee was served and dancing was re sumed. The coffee table w«s overlaid with a white linen cut work cloth and held an arrangement of shad ed carnations, and white snapdra gons. Graduated candles, pastel bells, gold and green foliage were used in the foyer. The entrance doors were decorated with white sprayed cedar and gold balls ! against a gold background. The debutantes were each pre- j sented a sterling silver gift as a memento of the occasion. Layton brought greetings from the City Mrs. Julian W. White, past de partment president, and wife of a native Newberrian, responded. Mrs. P. K. Harmon, unit Music Chai'-man, presented Misses Ted dy Jean Day and Kay Wade of Newberry College. Miss Day sang a delightful solo “Ho^inR-” ably accompanied by Miss Wade. Mrs. Dufford introduced the Zone I Vice President, Mrs. Pitts Stroud, Jr. of Greenwood, who in turn introduced the acting secre tary for the meeting, Mrs. M. W. Lorick Sr. of Lexington. Meeting chairman and committee, past de partment presidents, of whom Miss Grace Summer is one, and district presidents were introduc ed. Miss Summer is now district president. The highlight of the meeting was the address by the Department President, Mrs. J. M. McCord of Manning. She was introduced by ihe National Executive Commit- teewoman, Mrs. O. B. Franklin of Greenwood. Mrs. McCord gave a most in spiring and informative address on the goals and aims of The Ameri can Legion Auixiliary for the coming year. In addition to work for veterans and their families, she urged the recognition and ap preciation of good leadership, the sincere support of every effQ . 7 or strengthening patriotism anc the aims and goals of the Ameri can Legion and Auxiliary, the support of Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, the Woodrow Wil son Home and other historica shrines, Care, Free Europe Radio and TV programs, Girls State and all projects or contests which hel | strengthen or promote a 10GV 1 Americanism. She recommended reading “Mas- j tors of Deceit” by J. Edgar Hoov ev; books, publications, and use of films and all educational meas- i res that tend to keep us rightly informed as to any menace to th society. She appealed for partici pation in National Security w^rk of every kind whenever possible and to “have a devoted patriotism in our hearts.” Reports of department officer? and chairmen were heard. Following the meeting a deli cious luncheon was served in thi Community Hall by Mrs. Gurnle Summer, caterer, assisted by Miss Sarah Caldwell, Mrs. J. F. Hawk ins and Mrs. Marian Ruff. Guest | were greeted by Mrs. Charles Ruff and served fruit punch by Mrs James P. Fulp. Mrs. Dufford was toastmistreis and Mrs. R. E. Hanna returnee thanks at the luncheon. Mrs. Duf- ford presented Mrs. McCord .* beautiful brass bowl with marble base as a gift from the local unit. Mrs. Stroud was also presented brass bowl from the unit. The prizes were won by Mr | H. E.
