NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA Hie 'Rocket City” of Huntsville, Alabama, U.S.A., is linked both to a brilliant past and to the new age of outer space. It is the sec ond oldest city within the boundary of the territory now constituting Alabama, and is the oldest English settlement in the state. World War II marked the beginning of the great Arsenals nf Huntsville. First was the Huntsville Arsenal (now deacti vated) and later came the famous Redstone Arsenal, now a leader in the task of conquering outer space and defending the nation with weapons of the Rocket Age. A city of only 7,611 population in 1910, Huntsville has grown rapidly in recent years. A spe cial U.S. Census in 1956 listed population as 48,083. Estimated population in August, 1958, was <50,000. ' To many a visitor, Huntsville is a bizarre but extremely inter esting blend of the old and new; ranch style homes stand next door to pillared mansions more than a hurdred years old. At a modern drive in bank, the deposi tor doesn’t have to get out of his car, yet the cashier's cage has been placed in the same deten tion cells where, in 183o, slaves of local planters were impounded for their master’s ^ebts. ’ At Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal, scientists develop the nation’s large devices in rockets and guided missiles; only a short distance away farmers turn the red earth with walking plows. At Redstone Arsenal, scien tist Wernher Von Braun and his colleagues are contemplating cre ation of a space station designed to revolve as a new satellite more than a thousand miles above the earth. We were all asleep when a ter rible banging and shouting woke me. Dad was already pulling on his trousers and getting into his shoes. He went to the head of the stairs. There at the foot of the stairs stood a policeman, banging on the bannister with his night stick and shouting, “Hey, up there, come down here.” Dad rushed down and I followed. The policeman explained that he was passing on his regular round try ing all the doors as usual when he found our door unlocked. He made Dad examine the stock to see if anything was missing. » Everything was accounted for and undisturbed, so the policeman just gave Dad a stern warning about being sure the door was properly locked and left. After a few minutes the flights were turned off and Dad came upstairs. i It has never happened again.
