Now Ann is a sweet girl, she’s beautiful and extremel; talented, but when it comes to singing, her voice should be con fined to the nursery where the babies know no differently . . . Any hometown choir singer could put rings around the Blyth voice, yet with such talented singers as Kathryn Grayson and Jane Powell available, Ann keeps getting the big roles . . . Neither Katie nor Jane can act one-half as well as Ann. yet instead of one being in drama and die others in musicals, two ara not heard from at all any more and the other, who can’t sing worth a herring bone, gets all the breaks . „ . I CAN remember way back when the coffee dub members joked about it when pcience predicted development of Sk bomb that would wreck havoc and* destruction the likes of which the world had never seen. Boy, what these guys won’t dream up next, we told one an other. Then, along came the bomb. We began to follow reports of each new explosion with increasing credulity and no more joking. You have to get dead serious about something^ that might well blast you right off the face of the earth. Now science, which has long en visaged space travel and man made satellites floating along in outer space, predicts such things are waiting tot us around the next bend in the road of scientific prog ress. We’re practically off on a junket to the moon—and nobody’s laughing. You might snicker when a guy sets down to play,, but when he opens up with Chopin and Bee thoven, you have to stop snicker ing and listen. Science has made good on so many of its earlier pre dictions a smart operator could undertake a going business selling tickets right now for the first pleas ure cruise into the now unknown. While I am for progress in most any form, I sincerely hope that the conquest of outer space does not come before we are ready for it— and we are not ready for it now. Mankind has shown a pitiful inade quacy when it comes to living in peace and harmony. If there be life on other planets, then this old world is but one small neighbor hood in the cosmos. Neely have been appointed supervisor* in the men’s dormitories at Newberry college, according to an announcement by President C. A. aufmann. Mrs. Wilson will reside in the new dormitory and Mrs. Neely in Der rick hall. * Mrs. Wilson holds the M.Mus. degree in piano ‘from Elizabeth college (now Queens college) in Charlotte, N. C., and a graduate certificate in voice from the same institution. Her further training includes special voice lessons With Dr. F. W. Wodell of Converse oolfege.
