I T IS strange to us that Ann
Blyth continues to insist on lift
ing her voice in song, and stranger
still that so many movie producers
give her the choicest musical plums
to be had . . . Now Ann is a sweet
girl, she’s beautiful and extremel;
talented, but when it comes to
singing, her voice should be con
fined to the nursery where the
babies know no differently . . .
Any hometown choir singer could
put rings around the Blyth voice,
yet with such talented singers as
Kathryn Grayson and Jane Powell
available, Ann keeps getting the
big roles . . . Neither Katie nor
Jane can act one-half as well as
Ann. yet instead of one being in
drama and die others in musicals,
two ara not heard from at all any
more and the other, who can’t sing
worth a herring bone, gets all the
breaks . „ . You figure out the idio
syncrasies at movie producers!
Judy Garland is slated tp open
at the Palace In New York on
October 18, fourth anniversary of
her sensational 1961 opening at
that theater . . . Dean Martin and
Jerry Lewie would love to go their
own way but they'd have to cancel
millions of dollars of assured in
come to do so . . . Things are so
strained, however, that they may
do Just that. . . Somehow we can’t
picture Dean doing a solo ... He
has no talent except aa Jerry’s
partner . . Certainly his voice
isn’t good enough to buck the ex
cellent singers of today whereas
good comedians ara rare.

I CAN remember way back when
the coffee dub members joked
about it when pcience predicted
development of Sk bomb that would
wreck havoc and* destruction the
likes of which the world had never
seen. Boy, what these guys won’t
dream up next, we told one an
other. Then, along came the bomb.
We began to follow reports of each
new explosion with increasing
credulity and no more joking. You
have to get dead serious about
something^ that might well blast
you right off the face of the earth.
Now science, which has long en
visaged space travel and man
made satellites floating along in
outer space, predicts such things
are waiting tot us around the next
bend in the road of scientific prog
ress. We’re practically off on a
junket to the moon—and nobody’s
laughing. You might snicker when
a guy sets down to play,, but when
he opens up with Chopin and Bee
thoven, you have to stop snicker
ing and listen. Science has made
good on so many of its earlier pre
dictions a smart operator could
undertake a going business selling
tickets right now for the first pleas
ure cruise into the now unknown.
While I am for progress in most
any form, I sincerely hope that the
conquest of outer space does not
come before we are ready for it—
and we are not ready for it now.
Mankind has shown a pitiful inade
quacy when it comes to living in
peace and harmony. If there be
life on other planets, then this old
world is but one small neighbor
hood in the cosmos. If we can’t
live on this one planet without
fighting continually among our
selves, why go out looking for trou
ble somewhere else—where the
guys are probably bigger and
meaner than we are?

In 586 B. C. Cyrus issued the de
cree that returned the Jewish ex
iles to their ancestral land and as
sisted them in rebuilding Jerusa
lem. After seven months, in which
they had established themselves
in their new homes, the people
gave their attention to the rebuild
ing of the temple. They desired to
make it the center of their na
tion’s life, as it had been through
ages gone. They set up the altar
and then labored to build the tem
ple around it
Under the leadership of Zerub-
babel, the governor, and of Joshua,
a son of the high priest the work
was done and the ancient sacri
fices were offered a? of old. Hag-
gai, a practical man, sought to en
courage the workmen, urging them
to go into the mountains to secure
wood to be used in the rebuilding.
Then the word of the Lord came
unto Zechariah with s message for
Zerubbabel, a very great utter
ance: “Not by might nor by pow
er, but by my Spirit saith the
Lord of Hosts.”,It is quite possi
ble that Zerubbabel thought of un
dertaking a rebellion against Baby
lon, but he was warned of such
and urged to rely upon the spirit
ual resources at his command. So
shbuld we, in our church-bu tiding
enterprises and else consecrate
our possessions unto God and de
pend upon him to use them;
through us, in his kingdom.

Two New Employees
At Newberry College
Mrs. EHna Hipp Wilson and
Mrs. Margaret O. Neely have been
appointed supervisor* in the men’s
dormitories at Newberry college,
according to an announcement by
President C. A. aufmann. Mrs.
Wilson will reside in the new
dormitory and Mrs. Neely in Der
rick hall. *
Mrs. Wilson holds the M.Mus.
degree in piano ‘from Elizabeth
college (now Queens college) in
Charlotte, N. C., and a graduate
certificate in voice from the same
institution. Her further training
includes special voice lessons With
Dr. F. W. Wodell of Converse
oolfege. Mrs. Wilson has taught
in the Reidsville (N. C.> high
school. She is presently a mem
ber of the choir at St. John Luth
eran church in Spartanburg. She
is also a member of the Philhar
monic and the Women's Music
clubs. Her relatives in Newberry
include Mrs. Jackson Bowers and
Mrs. Homer Schumpert
A Business school graduate,
Mrs. Neely was also educated at
Meminger high and Normal school
in Charleston. She has served as
hostess at Joynes hall at Win-
throp and is currently living in
Newberry where she is active in
the work of the church and the
UDC; She is the widow of Dr. A.
T. Neely.

1 cup creamed cottage
cheese , ’
1 teaspoon salt
Vk cup chopped celery /
2 tablespoons chopped green
pepper • f »
1 tablespoon minced onion
4 slices rye breed, battered
4 large, thin tomato slices
Blend together cottage cheese,
salt, celery, green pepper and
onion. Toast bread on one side
before buttering. Spread each
