Pick Up WKDK In Los Angeles Jimmy Coggins, station mana ger of WKDK, received a letter last week from a resident of Los Angeles, California, writing that he had picked up the call letters and part of the “Wake Up and Sing” program broadcast January 24 over the station. The California man, Eugene Francis, in his letter named the time that he heard the program and a spot announcement for the local Goodyear store. Mr. Francis picked up the program on his car radio while driving in Los Angeles. Jersey Sale Forty-five Jersey heifers have been consigned by breeders to he sold at the annual Carolinas’ Jer sey Heifer sale at Newberry County Fair grounds Saturday at 12:30 p.m. It was pointed out that the heifers had been especially se lected by breeders of the two Carolinas for Junior members and for the promotion of the Jersey breed. It was announced that there are 16 selected bred heifers in the group. Sligh Rites Sunday At Smyrna Church Clarence Bachman Sligh, 71, died late Friday night at the home of his sister, Mrs. C. O. Eargle, on Hunt street. He had been in declining health but was seriously ill for the past four days. 'Mr. Sligh was born and reared in Newberry county, the son of the late John L. and Mary Dickert Sligh. He was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian church. He ha^ made his home in Clinton, Gaffney and for the past 16 years he made his home in Newberry. His wife, Mrs. Bessie Boozer Sligh, died six months ago. ' He is survived by one brother, T. C., Newberry; three sisters, Mrs. L. A. Bobb; Prosperity; Mrs. C. O. Eargle, Mrs. *J. B. Moore, both o'f Newberry, and a num ber of . nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conduct ed Sunday at 3 p.m. at Smyrna Presbyterian church by the Rev. S. T. Lipsey and the Rev. M. T. . Cullum. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Boozer New Towerman At Prosperity James Elmer Boozer, Route 2, Prosperity, has been appointed Prosperity Towerman effective April 1, according to E. L. Middle- swart, district forester of New berry. (Mr. Boozer will fill the vacancy left by Mrs. Grace Boozer Taylor’s resignation. Mr. Boozer is a native of that section of Newberry County and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Boozer. ■ He completed high school at O’Neal High School and has been farming since, with the exception of 3 years spent in the Army during World War II. Mr. Boozer is married to the former Ruth Frick and has 3 children. Prosperity Tower is one of 2 State-owned fire towers in New berry County. These towermen are key servants to all land- ow’ners in the county. They are on the alert during bad fire weather to make prompt report on wild woods fires. Assistance in actual suppressing the fire is given the landowner by the Coun ty Ranger and Wardens. The recent heavy rains have held fire occurrence down for the past few weeks, however, high winds will soon dry out the woods so wild fires will do great damage. Mrs. Cobb will be remembered' in Newberry as Edna Louise Bowers. Charles R. Barton, Mrs. Meeks’ Brother Passes In Taylors Charles R. Barton, 71, retired rural mail carter of Taylors, and brother of Mrs. Minnie Meeks of this city, died at his residence late Saturday night, following several years of declining health and a critical illness of four days. ])![r. Barton was born in upper Greenville county, a son of the late Albert and Elizabeth Howard Barton. He had lived in Taylors for 65 years, carrying mail on Taylors Route 2 for 42 years. Mr. Barton retired from the postal service in 1^8. He was a member of the First Baptist church for 60 years and a former member of the board of o-tdeacons. He was a member of Magnolia Camp No. 162, W.O/W., and of Taylors Masonic Lodge- No. 345. Besides Mrs. Meeks, he is sur vived by his wife; Mrs. Nettie Taylor Barton; a son, James Bar ton of Kannapolis, N. C., and a sister, Mrs. Eula McMahan of Route 3, Greer. Mrs. Schumpert, e Resident, | ■ Yesterday Mrs. Agnes Whitaker Schum pert, 6, died early yesterday morn ing (Thursday) at the Newberry County Memorial hospital after a lingering illness. She was the widow of Robert Lee Schumpert and was the daughter of the late H. W. and Carrie Sligh Whitaker. She was a life-long resident of Newberry. She wAs a life member of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service and was a member of Central Methodist church. She is survived by two sons, Robert Lee Schumpert of M*£i- son, Wisconsin, and John Walker Schumpert of Newberry; two daughters, Mrs. Woodrow Ward of Hartsville, and Miss Marie Schumpert of Newberry; four brothers* H. Rushe Elected President College Students George Marlon Rushe of' West Columbia was elected President of the student body of Newberry College during the student elec tions . held at the college this week. Miss Betty Jean Adams of Saluda was. elected vice-presi dent of the student body in the general elections. Other officers will be elected such as secretary and treasurer of the ptudent body. Mr. Rushe is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Rushe of 147 Alexandria Ave., West Columbia. He is a rising senior and a minis terial studenL He plans to enter the Lutheran ministry.
