The nation’s two biggest crop years, coming on top of the other, foreshadow general re turn to pre-war government production controls to curtail output next year to avoid further surpluses. Mr. Carver was a son of Washington and Nettie Collier Carver and was beom in Graham County, N. C., but re cently had moved to the Gos hen Hill section of Union County. Haie, of Saluda, said today that he would return to his district when Congress ad joums probably at the end of next week, passing up two tours by House Merchant Ma rine subcommittees of which he is a member. j. b. McDowell ILL AT HOME J. B. McDowell has been very ill at his home on Evans Street for the past ten days. His con dition was reported this morn ing to be about the same. CLOSED THURSDAY The offices of Dr. Z. Cecil Lynch will be closed Thursday, but will remain open Wednes day. Dr. Lynch will be out of the city Thursday on semi official business. COUNTY FAIR IS WEEK AFTER NEXT The premium _ catalog has been mailed for'the 1949 New berry County Fair, sponsored for the past several years by Legion Post 24. Attractive prizes are to be found in the catalog for all sorts of exhibits. The Ffir management is ex pecting a good fair this year both standpoint of exhibits and entertainment. Harvests have been good over the county and indications are that clubs and individuals ane anxious place their wares before public in the Fair booths. Frank Sutton says he lined up some good entertain ers for the week. There will be the usual free acts, plus shows and concessions of many sorts. Some local orgainzations will operate eating booths. Agnew, president. Mr. Agnew said the goal for the State has been set at 25,000 this year. This, he pointed out, is an increase of some 10,000 over the present figure of slightly more than 15,000. ,— The membership campaign is being carried out by each coun ty organization on local basis. In most counties a fall annual meeting will climax the drive for new members. Early reports indicate that many counties will top past membership marks.
