THE NEWBERRY SUN, NEWBERRY, S. C. “Dad, can I establish a drawing account on my weekly allowance ?’’ CROSS TOWN By Roland Coe “Until you learn the difference between a zinnia and a weed you can keep that hoe out of my flower bed.” MUTT AND JEFF By Bud Fisher LITTLE REGGIE By Margarita JITTER By Arthur Pointer WONDER DOG Joe Purdy, an ex-soldier living out South Dakota way, adopted a former army pal, a dog who served with him in the signal corps. The observant animal had watched Joe for many hours while he wig wagged messages with flags. One day toe took his dog out to look for birds. They were in a broken, hilly portion of the state, in a section sparsely covered with patches of underbrush and small pine trees. The dog was about 800 feet in front of his master, up on the brow of a small hillock, when suddenly he stopped and stuck his tail straight up in the air. Then’his tail began to jerk first one way and then the other. It was trans mitting a message! Joe watched breathlessly, while the sagacious animal wigwagged: “Joe — have you — got — any — heavy — ammunition? Unless— you — have — get — the — heck— out — of — here. Big — brown — bear — up — here — coming — ydur — way — Vamoose!” SILENT MUSIC An art lover, viewing a fine paint ing representing a man playing a flute, and desiring to compliment the artist, remarked: “When I look at that painting I think myself deaf.” The Verdict “This,” said the late A1 Smith, “actually happened in Tammany hall.” x There was a certain prominent politician familiarly known around the hall as “Harry,” who occasion ally favored the members of that democratic body with a speech of the flamboyant, spread-eagle vari ety. One day this scintillating states man arose before an assemblage in the auditorium and proclaimed: “God is my witness, and you, my fellow citizens, are the gentle men of the jury!” A dramatic pause. Then, from out of the darkened gallery came the resounding reply: “You’re guilty, Harry!” No Mind Needed For years. Grandpa Tubbs had been stubborn and crabbed. No one in the village could please him. Then, overnight, he changed. Gentleness and optimism twinkled about him. The villagers were amazed. •'‘Grandpa,” he was asked, “what caused you to change so sud denly?” “Well, sir,” Grandpa Tubbs re plied, “I’ve been striving all my life for a contented mind. It’s done me no good, so I’ve just decided to be contented without it." REG’LAR FELLERS By Gene Byrnes Expensive Fireplace Sitting in the house of commons when news was brought to him that his Drury Lane theater was on fire, Richard Brinsley Sheridan excused himself and hastened to the scene of the conflagration. A huge crowd blocked his ap proach to the fire. He elbowed his way to the front and crawled under the ropes. A burly policeman blocked his way. “I say,” protested Sheridan, pleasantly, “surely a man may warm himself by his own fire.” DOESN’T LIKE IT VIRGIL By Len Kleis SILENT SAM , By Jeff Hayes i*) ft i Father—When I was a boy your age, I thought nothing of a five mile walk.
