THE NEWBERRY SUN, NEWBERRY, S. C. NANCY TODAV IS OUR BIG KIDDIE PARTV AT THE TOWN HALL NANCY—OUR COMMITTEE HAS DECIDED TO SERVE MILKSHAKES AT THE PARTY By Ernie Bushmiller MUTT AND JEFF By Bud Fisher LITTLE REGGIE JITTER By Arthur Pointer SILENT SAM By Jeff Hayes GENTLE WARNING A man in Springfield, 111., discov ered that neighbor’s chickens scratched up seeds in his garden as fast as he planted them. Finally, in desperation he came home one night with several neatly lettered shipping tags. Punching holes in kernels of com, he attached the tags to them and scattered the com in the garden. Next morning the chickens wasted no time in gobbling up the ker nels. But a little later, their owners read with surprise the tags flutter ing from their bills: “I have been a bad bird. Please keep me home before I get killed.” EXPERIENCED A lady was entertaining her friend’s small son. “Are you sure,” she asked, watching his struggles, “you can cut up your meat?” “Oh, yes,” the youngster replied brightly, “we often have it as tough as this at home!” Not Anonymous Henry Ward Beecher, famous New England clergyman, was open ing his mail one morning. Drawing a single sheet from an envelope he found written on it one word: “Fool.” The next Sunday, in the course of his sermon, he referred to it in these words: “I have known many an instance of a man writing letters and for getting to sign his name. But this is the only instance I have known of a man signing his name and for getting to write his letter.” Old Stuff A certain notorious Broadway spender recently accosted a former college mate, a rather humdrum but hard-working financial success, and taunted him about his shabby appearance. “Why,” observed the spendthrift dandy, “I do believe that’s your grandfather’s topcoat you’ve got there.” “Yes,” was the cheerful reply, “and I still have my grandfather’s land also. Don’t you wish you could say that, too?” Home Jungle The former marine was relating some of his adventures on a Pacif ic island to friends who had come for the evening. “At times,” he said, “we had to hack our way through what seemed to be impenetrable jungle masses. Only the strongest got through.” His wife, who had been listening from the kitchen remarked: “Why didn’t you tell me all this before, dear? Now I won’t have to think about weeding the garden this year.” , SPECKLED WORLD “I had trouble with my eyes—saw spots in front of ’em.” “Do your glasses help?” “Yeh, now I can see the spots much better.” Quick Way Out Shortly after being defeated for re-election, Sen. Harry S. New of Indiana was walking down a cor ridor in the Capitol, when he was accosted by a woman visitor who had lost her way. “Pardon me,” said she, “but I am trying to get out of the senate. Can you tell me how to do it?” “Madam,” replied the lame duck senator, bowing low, “I would sug gest that you run in an Indiana pri mary.” Where’s My Rattle? An old codger fell for a fantastic fountain of youth scheme. Follow ing the directions he took six pills and went to bed. His family had difficulty awaken ing him next morning. After a fierce struggle they finally managed to wake him up only to hear him say, “I’ll get up, but I won’t go to school.” Watching Each Other Three partners were riding in a train and one of them said sudden ly, “Good heavens, we forgot to lock the safe in our office!” “What are you worrying about?” replied one of the other partners. “We’re all her* together, aren’t we?” Unhatched “Waiter, we want chicken, and we want very young chicken.” “In that case, sir, hadn’t you bet ter order eggs?” SEWING CIRCLE PATTERNS ^t^aytime ^roch in ejCarcjer Size5 WaL fitted WJriff for S, ummer Matron’s Summer Frock.
