HARPER t ’ A Good Sodier of Christ Jesus. XfCsson for June 18: n Timothy. ^ Golden Text: II Timothy 2:3. We cannot determine from Acts 16:1 whether Timothy’s home was in Derbe or Lystra. His father was a Greek and his mother a Jewess. We find him with Paul and Silas at Berea, with Paul during his first imprisonment in Home, and later in Asia. Left in charge of the Ephesus church, it is thought that he became “bish op” of it. Paul loved Timothy dearly, called him his son in the gospel, and was deeply concerned Tor the younger man’s success. This is seen in his two Epistles to Timothy. • In the second Epistle, Paul ar dently expresses his love for Tim- o’-hy^ admonishes him to “stir up the gift of God” in him and to be a “workman of God . . . right ly dividing the word of truth,” and urges him to cultivate “gen tleness, patience, meekness,’:’ and to suffer hardship “as a good sol dier of Christ Jesus.” Paul, foreseeing an apostasy ri They Are The Only EYES ‘ You Will Ever Have DR. Some of the things Paul foresaw would tempt men and draw them away are found at the present, and we should be ad monished to hold to the Word of Ood for our own security. Paul’s final words, written from prison In Rome, are indeed touch ing. Think of the prisoner for Christ writing of the closing of his own career. As in death itself we find comfort in the blessed consolations of the New Testa ment, let us find courage and strength in the thought of the re ward that awaits the faithful.
