Bonnette xeminds farmers that there are many important jobs needing in tention in September. Some of Jthe most important he lists are: Agronomy 1. Use winter cover crops to grow your next year’s fertilizer. 2. Quality in ginned cotton? will pay; pick cleah, store dry, gin carefully, and top your market. 3. There are phosphorus and potash reserves left in your cotton fields; plant small grains and make use of them. 4. Now is the time to obtain limestone — under AAA grants if possible.- 5. Prepare now for a permanent pasture next year. Horticulture 1. Keep strawberry beds free of weeds and grass. Set some se lected new plants. v '2. ' Plant spinach seed in late September lor winter and spring use. 3. Sow turnips up to Sept. 20, Sho rn^ and Seventop for greens,’and nyhite Egg for roots. 4. Keepf fall garden crops well cultivated and fertilized. 6. Sow seed” late in September for ‘tftfbst-proof” cabbage plants. 7. Be sure to have your Victory garden full of various “greens” this fall and printer. ^ Agricultural Engineering 1. It is not too late to build a trench or box * silo, see your county agent for plans. 2. Clean, cfl, and store cultivating ma chinery. 3. Get mower and rake in good condition for cutting hay crops. 4. If rat-proof grain stor age buildings are needed, get plans through county agent’s of fice. 5. Pick cotton clean and dry in order to get better prices. Insects and Diseases 1. Treat all small grain for dis ease control — apparently new strains of smut even on resistant varieties make it necesary to ad vise treatment of all seed oats. 2. In the coastal section discuss with county agent early stalk destruc tion for boll weevil control. 3. Plow under tobacco stalks and other crop refuse to destroy food and immature Stages of insects. 4. Remove dead and dying or chard trees and limbs and burn them to control insects. 5. Knock off all diseased fruits after har- -vest to aid in disease control. 5. Requeen bees. 7. Repel screws worm flies with pinetar oil and loll magots with benzol. 8. AH taxes shall be due and pay able between the 15th day of Sep tember,, 1943, and December ■ 31, 1943. • That when taxes charged shall not be paid by December 31, 1943, The County Auditor shall proceed to add a penalty of one per cent for January, and if taxes are not paid on or before February 1, 1944, the County Auditor will proceed to add Two Per Cent for February, and if taxes are not paid on or be fore March 1, 1944, the County Au ditor shall proceed to add 3 per cent for March, and if taxes are rot naid on or before April 1, 1944, the County Auditor shall proceed to add 4 per cent up to the 15th of April, 1944, after which time the County Treasurer shall issue executions for all unpaid taxes, plus 7 per cent penalty. This kudzu has made a good growth and will oroduce hay or grazing next year. Mr. Talbert intends to use it for uionlementary grazing. Mr. P. J. Dowtin has an excel lent stand of sericea lespedeza for the first year. I have in spected most of the sericea planted this year and have been pleased to find good results. These stands will make a re markable improvement next year Mr. S. O.
