Farmers’ Calendar
For September Jobs
County Agent G. W. Bonnette
xeminds farmers that there are
many important jobs needing in
tention in September. Some of
Jthe most important he lists are:
Agronomy
1. Use winter cover crops to
grow your next year’s fertilizer.
2. Quality in ginned cotton? will
pay; pick cleah, store dry, gin
carefully, and top your market.
3. There are phosphorus and potash
reserves left in your cotton fields;
plant small grains and make use
of them. 4. Now is the time to
obtain limestone — under AAA
grants if possible.- 5. Prepare
now for a permanent pasture
next year.
Horticulture
1. Keep strawberry beds free
of weeds and grass. Set some se
lected new plants. v '2. ' Plant
spinach seed in late September
lor winter and spring use. 3.
Sow turnips up to Sept. 20, Sho
rn^ and Seventop for greens,’and
nyhite Egg for roots. 4. Keepf
fall garden crops well cultivated
and fertilized. 6. Sow seed” late
in September for ‘tftfbst-proof”
cabbage plants. 7. Be sure to

a trench or box * silo, see your
county agent for plans. 2. Clean,

crops. 4. If rat-proof grain stor
age buildings are needed, get
plans through county agent’s of
fice. 5. Pick cotton clean and
dry in order to get better prices.

vise treatment of all seed oats. 2.
In the coastal section discuss with
county agent early stalk destruc
tion for boll weevil control. 3.
Plow under tobacco stalks and
other crop refuse to destroy food
and immature Stages of insects.

chard trees and limbs and burn
them to control insects. 5. Knock
off all diseased fruits after har-
-vest to aid in disease control.
5. Requeen bees. 7. Repel screws
worm flies with pinetar oil and
loll magots with benzol. 8. Plant
