MILITARY ACADEMY Clemson, July 6.—If South Caro lina farmers will only take advan tage of the opportunities offered by our soils and climate, there should never be a hungry person or animal in the state, declares H. A. Woodle, extension agronomist, urging that every farmer should resolve that his pantry and bam will be filled this fall, that every member of his family and every head of his livestock will be pro vided with abundant rations. “Even now, every farmer should be preparing to plant wheat this fair*, Mr. Woodle advises. “There should be at least three acres of wheat for each farm family and now is the time to procure seed and to select the field or fields to plant this fall. “The farm garden plays an im portant part in supplying plenty of fresh vegetables, but many field crops also furnish food and feed for the family and livestock”, Mr. Woodle continues. “If a farm does not have liberal acreages of sweet potatoes, sorghum, cowpeas, soybeans, and pearl millet, there is still time to provide for such crops. There should be no excuse for an empty pantry or bam in South Carolina. “Plentiful food and feed reserves have always been necessary and prpfitable, but considering present world conditions, it is more vital and important than ever that our fanners plant and harvest bounti ful food supplies.” Prom The Augusta Herald, July 10. Cadet Charlie C. Coleman, U. S. Military Academy, is at home with his father, L. C. Coleman, McCor mick, on a 10-week furlough. Knowing the rigidness and the necessity of ability and industry at the West Point school, The Herald takes pardonable pride in seeing Charlie achieving his life-long ambition. You see, he used to be a carrier boy, and even then, he longed for nothing but to be an officer in the army. A native of McCormick, S. C., he attended the Academy of Rich mond County and the first year of I Junior College, staying with an aunt in Augusta at the time. It was during this period that he delivered The Herald, from 1033 to 1936. His route consisted of , some 500 customers on Broad, Greene and Telfair streets, and The Herald’s circulation depart ment files show the excellent record he made. From the paper route, he was able to pay for his schooling, clothes, and the like. But more valuable than the money he received, Charlie point ed out while visiting The Herald Tuesday,, was the training. He stated that it has helped him im measurably since his days as a carrier. In 1936, he joined the army, being stationed at Fort Benning. During the next two years, he at tended the preparatory school at Fort McPherson. And in July, 1938, he received his appointment to West Point. Incidentally, at West Point, he met former Herald Carrier Cadet Elmo Layfiend, of Augusta. With a post as second lieuten ant in the infantry waiting for liim upon graduation, Charlie Coleman is on the threshhold of realization of his ambition. And The Herald is proud.
