FOOD ABULTERTION "In a pure food case that was take: up from Philadelphia to the Suprem court of Pennsylvania,' says Publi Policy, 'the plea was made that th - law is not violated unless the quantit; I of foreign substance on a food staple i sufficient to injure health.' The Su preme court decision is that any poison ous ingredient, whether in quantity t injure health or not, is a violation o the statute. The cry goes up that thi 'will affect 20 per cent of the stock o the average dealer.' If one-fifth of the merchandise sold for food contains poi sonous ingredients, there is a startlinl necessity for the active measures. The stupid plea that the poison is not enoug} in any one article to hurt the consumei indicates that the venders never giv( enough thought to any aspect of the question but the pursuit of the r.imbl( dime and nickel to learn the effect of the cumulative poisoning. Certainl) when we hear from the trade itself thai the practice of mixing poison in fooc has attained a 20 per cent prevalence, it is time for strenuous supuression, aimed with the most vigor at the manu facturers of such articles."
