THE JOINT DEBATE and Anniversary Celebration of the Literary Oli Societies of Newberry College-A Strong and Logical Debate Be fore a Crowded House. On Friday night the anniversary cele >ration of the literary socieites of New- ' >erry College was held. There is always Lwa he greatest interest taken in these occa- aft( ions by the people of Newberry, and on anc Friday night, although the weather was a nclement, the house was crowded. bef The Excelsior and Phrenakosmian So- ter :ieties were represented in the debate and >y an orator, and the Philomathean, cro he young ladies' society of the college, ibc >y an essayist. The excellent program am vas well carried out in every particular. tbe [n fact, the opinion was freely expressed hat tais celebration was one of the best tha n the history of the societies. Mr. W. C. Summer presided with ease -t Lnd grace. The question for debate was: gai Resolved, That children under 14 years )f age should be prohibited by law from thr vorking in cotton mills and factories. PiLl The Phrenakosmian Society, as repre- ig ented by Messrs. C. L. Wessinger and S. ba ?. Frick. upheld the affirmative side of str he question, and Messrs. W. F. Beden- bal augh and C. D.
