It is a valutable experience for peo ple of this section to hear men of the stamp of Ex-See. of the Treas. Slhaw. (11n old lite and hide-bound Repulibli Can, talk on issues of the day. We of tills section are given too iulich to listening to out' own party leader.; and reading only our party plapers when we oug ht to hear both sides of important (tiuestiols. Of course gov vrnimeit owniiershiip of railroads is not yet a party issue. but if it was we know at. leask whee Leslip '\. -tIw ,ill Stattil anld n\I will kniow somew of That vas a powefuil lecture dr';iv ered by Dr. 0!t at thIe ('haui tau (tIua tcit Friday evein upon tle subject, "Victory," in which lIe pointed out that the real vietory of de moee'a( y over autocracy woIld not ihe comttte v(. cn wiln the (erImans have signed;o Treaty of Versailles. The victory. he said. properly could not lit won until tihe principles of justice and ( demnocra cy had become implanted in the con sciences of the people and nations of the vorld, or something to that effect. After giving a general illustration e lte fundamental difference between demlocratic and autocratic government. -showing that the rule of the people rather than that of an autocrat was the only just, as well as liermanen(1t. fori of government-he pointed out that the education of these teople was the safe Puard against misrile. To properly tilpress upon thle people the ISIonst i bilitiei of government and to insure the eductonaIl aid spirittal life which would hin g forth the best form I of iitizenshi ip, he urued a turity of 'homev life, suiptrt of schools and ('hiturcels and ai ebenetier 11dl op-. liiatil eih ins. l1tr. Ott madie a lower full plea for the fit ur welfar. of the latiot alid Ile world, butt hie ni'le (r vors whiht so dltrtacted frot lIhe uond points in his leetire that, if a balance were drawn between the good aitd the had, it is doutilful which sidt wont d cut weigh the other. It is tunfortnti;n tiat a leetire so fraugh t w th good should have beien spoiled 1by m tick - raking tactics (al('tilateid to tickle the car at the tini butt yfI. w'e t ,,eected In analysis,. are foinel to ri na tinirie. We will not deal with his tiunwarrantedi criticism of the postoftice oili('tatls for delays of the mail in France when the mail was in the hands of the military, nor of itis iicute of thot~se earnest andl sel f-saeti fiing innis teris of Ithe gospel who are plodding year in andl yeatr out triyinr to (10 good, nori even to his references to newspapers wic'hot hande Icitateit tmited iinte ad'ettising. rThese arie all relat ively minor mat - uer's. needing correct ion pei'ha ps, but nevettheless hai'dlv needing atten tlin. Ittit t~r. Ott's at tack upon t he Press as a porwer' foir evil was undeserving, utnwarriantedl aind calculated to (10 h)ounfdles5s harmit. It must lhe remtembered that thle at tack upon the integi'ity of the Press was not original with Dri. Ott. It has become itilte the vogue with politic ians and other' speaker's seeking pubi lie favoi' and public money to ber'ate the newvspaper's. We have one and (juite a few otihei' shining exampldes of suich in this State. Other States have them also and, to repeat, it has be come (uite a vogue and Dir. Ott, so to speak, is just getting on the band wagon, But the differ'ence bet ween Dr'. Ott and these other cities of the press is that heO delivei's his addrhiess undet' the auspicesi of ait organization which Is considered and is receIved as an educational institutioni, onte with out prejudice, wvith no axe to gi'ind and worthy of aind p)ossessing the ('on ihlence of the pieopl e who supp~lor't it and attend its sessions. A speaker's worth then is niot measur'ed by his de sire to get otlice, buit by his owvn per' sonal ity andl the auspices tinderi which lie comes. Conneetedl with his other wise powverful address, and tinder such'l favorahie autsp)ies, the muckraking charges were given conside'able force. No'w, there are black sheep In the Press of this country as there are black sheep in every other profession, btut taken as a whole, It is uipr'ight, honest and sincere. Many of its wor'kers are idealists and dreamers, so much so that they eke out but a meagre living. Imposed on by indi 'vidttals andl the ptiblic, not to foruget the Chatitairuua, they work day in and day out for the public welfai'e, receiv Ina- more knocks titan thanks, vet gn ing ahe'dd just the same towpproach old age In penury or as pensioners upon their friends and relatives. Hap lily, however, the newspaper men are fast getting to be better business men. But, no doubt, Dr. Ott would say that he was referring to the "big dailies"; but he (id not. say so and if he had lie would have been just as far 'wrong. The big dailies are like the little ones, just a reflect.ion of the age In which they live, and we are not ready to say that this age Is any worse than the past. A few newspapers, no doubt, are bought and sold for ulterior mo tives, but they are few and short lived. The Press of today, large and small, is as worthy of the confidence of the peoile today as It has ever been, in spite of the war propaganda, govern ment censorship and a few yellow sheets aind when anyone attempts to shake this confidence, he is doing a grievous injury not only to the news paI'ers themselves bit to the public as well. 4SINTUSIX~l CONGRESS CONVENED 310NDAY (Continued from Page One.)
