Ittit t~r. Ott's at tack upon t he Press
as a porwer' foir evil was undeserving,
utnwarriantedl aind calculated to (10

It must lhe remtembered that thle at
tack upon the integi'ity of the Press
was not original with Dri. Ott. It has
become itilte the vogue with politic
ians and other' speaker's seeking pubi
lie favoi' and public money to ber'ate
the newvspaper's. We have one and
(juite a few otihei' shining exampldes of
suich in this State. Other States have
them also and, to repeat, it has be
come (uite a vogue and Dir. Ott, so to
speak, is just getting on the band
wagon, But the differ'ence bet ween
Dr'. Ott and these other cities of the
press is that heO delivei's his addrhiess

which Is considered and is receIved as
an educational institutioni, onte with
out prejudice, wvith no axe to gi'ind

and attend its sessions. A speaker's
worth then is niot measur'ed by his de

wise powverful address, and tinder such'l

charges were given conside'able force.
No'w, there are black sheep In the
Press of this country as there are
black sheep in every other profession,
btut taken as a whole, It is uipr'ight,
honest and sincere. Many of its
wor'kers are idealists and dreamers,
so much so that they eke out but a
meagre living. Imposed on by indi

old age In penury or as pensioners
upon their friends and relatives. Hap
lily, however, the newspaper men are
fast getting to be better business men.
But, no doubt, Dr. Ott would say that
he was referring to the "big dailies";
but he (id not. say so and if he had lie
would have been just as far 'wrong.
The big dailies are like the little ones,
just a reflect.ion of the age In which
they live, and we are not ready to say
that this age Is any worse than the
past. A few newspapers, no doubt,
are bought and sold for ulterior mo
tives, but they are few and short lived.
The Press of today, large and small,
is as worthy of the confidence of the
peoile today as It has ever been, in
spite of the war propaganda, govern
ment censorship and a few yellow
sheets aind when anyone attempts to
shake this confidence, he is doing a
grievous injury not only to the news
paI'ers themselves bit to the public
as well.
