MoPadden of Havana, Ill., Attends to Business With Same Vigor That En e abied Him to Build Up One of Larg , est Estates In County. Havana, I11.-II. W. McFadden, who has just returned from a surveying trip tohis farms in the eastern part of Mason county, is considered one of the most remarkable business men in this part of the state. Mr. McFadden is ninety years old and is entirely deaf and almost blind. Ile looks after his business with the same interest and vigor that enabled him to build up one of the largest estates in the county. All his work is done through a sec retary, who must copy all of his let ters. This is done with a largo black marking crayon in letters two inches high. Not only does lie read all his mail in this way, but he is also in tensely interested in the European war, and all of the war news from the papers must he copied for hit. Mr. McFadden is a native of New York state and caie to Illinois when a young man of twenty-two, without any more thanit a good edication and a sound mind and body. Ile first settled in Peoria, where lie served as county surveyor for six years. In 1862 lie came to Ilavalta and built the first ele vator here. FIive years later lie estab lished the Mason County bank, the old est tnncial histilution ii the county, of which he is now the president.
