Havana, I11.-II. W. McFadden, who
has just returned from a surveying
trip tohis farms in the eastern part
of Mason county, is considered one of
the most remarkable business men in
this part of the state. Mr. McFadden
is ninety years old and is entirely deaf
and almost blind. Ile looks after his
business with the same interest and
vigor that enabled him to build up
one of the largest estates in the county.
All his work is done through a sec
retary, who must copy all of his let
ters. This is done with a largo black
marking crayon in letters two inches
high. Not only does lie read all his
mail in this way, but he is also in
tensely interested in the European
war, and all of the war news from the
papers must he copied for hit.
Mr. McFadden is a native of New
York state and caie to Illinois when
a young man of twenty-two, without
any more thanit a good edication and a
sound mind and body. Ile first settled
in Peoria, where lie served as county
surveyor for six years. In 1862 lie
came to Ilavalta and built the first ele
vator here. FIive years later lie estab
lished the Mason County bank, the old
est tnncial histilution ii the county,
of which he is now the president. A
short tinte later he went to 'eort
where lie built the Central City eleva
tor, the first elevator to be built it
Peoria. Liter he estabished the sys
