The poem was composed by Mrs. j H. K. A. Dendy, a very talented woin an, mother of Edltor W. J. Dendy of' the Clinton Gazette. While the meter and rhythm are j irregular the poem contains pas sages of true poetic fervor, and one who studies Us phrases will be haunt ed by certain of them: "Our Dead. Uring flowers and crown our heroes Wreathe garlands for each head, Then kneeliug, lowly kneeling. Wreathe tear-drops for the dead. Wreathe tear-drops for our heroes, Our noble Spartan band. Who. leaving home and all else dear, Have died for freedom's land. Wreathe tear-drops for our leaders, Our gallant Edwards, .lames, and Nance, Like lions foremost In the fight Like lightning's flash each glance. Wreathe tear-drops, for each noble form Must ever sleep in ciay; In mcmoriam of our noble dead. Our hearts must weep today. Weep! weep for gallant Langston! His Musgrove boys so dear. For Williams. Hoyce. Copeland, Hamage, Byrd, Burly. Book. Xabors. weep: For Braddoek. Johnson, Crawford. Bell, East,? But let them sleep: Sleep Griffin, Dunlap. Mtddleton, Gra ham. Barksdale. Life's labors o'er you may rest; we will you vigils keep. We miss each smile, each tone. each, noble form today, Oh God! May we not weep; each loved form sleeps in clay ; Wee))! weep! but no, we may not weep, now let each tear be dry, We may not weep, they're gone to join the "Armies of the sky." j We may not weep, but memories' bells may peal a requiem forth. May penl a requiem for the dead of oi>r Own sunny South. King X- memory bells. Oh. ring as with Ib??vie? of Are, King for y?ifttjf gallant Owens, ring, and for his A'.Sbie sire, For Blakely, Butler, Outlier, McDow ell, Young, Horton. Ivmyfleld, ring. i, M ? iii i !,**'?*? C. For Craddock, Gary. Frankllu. Neil, Henry. Simpson, Vance, We may not weep but sing. Then sing of Davis, Little Kay. Beard on. Clopton, and Adair. I^oe, James, Powell, MeCrnry, Fer guson, Palmer, then drop a tear, Wreathe garlands for each sleeping form, sing for the conflict's o'er. Each Spirit wear:, the victor's wreath?lives, lives to die no more. McKelva^v, Hutchinson and Abrains wear the victor's wreathe of love, Live With the happy, blest and free in yon bright world above. Then wreathe the rosebud, willow, yew, with tear-drops for each form Then turn aside and let them sleep, "till the resurrection morn." They're gone to join that army where, the star cross banner waves; Where "Great I am" sits on His throne, and none are abject-slaves They're gone, and we should for our selves, the most compassion feel, They're passed above the tyrant's head, we at his footstool kneel. Our mother at his footstool knelt, he bids her there remain. Her arms are pinioned, don't you hear the clanking of her chains The smoke wreathe crowns her noble head; ashes upon her see. But list! she's many a gallant son 'neath her Palmetto tree Then let us not weep for our dead, let this our watchword be. When these, our arms, have stronger grown, we will, we wtU be free.
