It is a Bad, sad. yet a sweet feeling that we on this, the anniversary of our mother's death, look back over her life. When we think of the many, many things taught us. when our lit tle minds and hearts could not quite j understand them; but as the years i came, and passed, and we can see and , understand those lessons taught us by our mother, how we thank God for such a mother. When we think of the patience! with which she bore her a the t ion, always saying: "Cod's will be done." we can but think all Is well with her. She was the last of her mother's family to pass over the river. Her father, mother, three sisters and four brothers had gone before. When we J look bai It over our lives before our family chain was broken, with the ex ception 01 a baby sister, Theodocla, whom we never knew only in the hearts j of mother and sister, who uevei tired talking of her baby ways. What a j happy family we were when death en tered and first broke the chain, in our j lives by claiming the third daughter, | j Lidle. .lust as she entered young' j womanhood she was called up higher; ? \ and in all of her youth and beauty we 1 bad to give her up. Why so we could not understand. She was indeed I "blithe ami bonny, good and gay." ! When our loved pastor, the Rev. .1. D, Pitts pronounced the benediction ovot her grave we felt that the sun could never shine in our lives again, but God has a way of comforting those who trust Him, and we cam*' to think it was best so. or it would not have been so. The next one Whom God called was our father, .lohn M. Franks, lie was an Ideal father. I low well do we re member his life, and the example lie set for Iiis children; and we can never forget that bright and beautiful Sun j day in June. Our pastor then, the Rev. j.l. I'.. Parrot! in love and tenderness 'that he knew so well how to speak, performed the last sad rites over our dear father, and spoke words of coin fort and sympathy to our aching hearts. We turned from Iiis grave back to home and duty. How sad ! home was without father! His last re quest was "Take care of mother and sister as you have me." Smothering 'our own heart-aches we tried to car. ry out Iiis wishes. Weeks and then' months glided by; and after we did everything In our power to keep out oldest sister. Kinma. God willed it oth erwise, she was our heart's Idol in a sister. What sweet and tender mem ories when we think of her life, so full of kind deeds for others, until she was shut in by affliction, and then how patient she was through ell of her suffering. When we stood by the cas ket ami looked on her calm and peace ful face for the last time we felt like our hearts were broken; but trusting God we said "Thy will be done." Our pastor then. Rev. If. J. Woodward, as sisted by the Rev. J. 1). Pitts, our former pastor, performed the last sad rites over her grave. We turned again to our thrice sad home and for mother's sake forced a cheerfulness that we could not feel. Mother was so dependent on us for everything: almost blind with her oth er suffering she was one constant care, and what a precious care she was to our hearts We can see her now as she would look into our face and say. "daughter, help me thank God for His good and loving care." When mother, died our Pastor, Rev. K. ('. Watson was' away, so it was seemingly fitting that we should have (he Rev. Melvin Shell Whose mother was a dear friend ot hers to perform the burial service. When Mr. Shell who had so often read God's word and knelt and prayed with us on all occasions pronounced the benediction over mother's beautiful flower-covered grove, wo thought there is no home without mother. We will draw the curtain for God alone knows tie' depth of that feeling, and He only can comfort such a heart-ache, and we. the two brothers and two sisters have the assurance that our loss is their gain. To our many friends, who so kindly : ml lovingly tendered us every as sistance, ami sympathy we do remem ber them with heart-felt appreciation. Would that we could make them feel how we do appreciate such lovo and kindness shown us at such a sad and lonely time, and on till now their sweet sympathy and loving kindness is such a comfort. We have much in heaven to make It dear to us. and may God help us who are left to live our lives in stich a way that ultimately we shall be a united and happy family with the joy of seeing our blessed Re deem"!. Probably so, such an aggregation are liable to do anything. That this would be a fine route for Hying machines of all kinds cannot be refuted, but the subject un der discussion was a good road on the ground and when this wanted, the trav elers had best come via Laurens. "There's a reason.". The boys all say that stretch out South Church street. Spartanburg by Arkwrlght mill and on to Walnut drove. 18 miles is a "peach". Long, gentle, smooth grades. The the cars from here last Tues day, two touring and three runabouts, all went to Spartanburg and back via Knoree and Woodruff with perfect scores. "Nary a puncture.*' They were back by 5:110. Laurens county roads are not per fect yet. but that they are far and away better than some others we could name, a cross country trip oi a hundred miles will easily demon strate, No one who has ever heard of the Golden Rule will dump tin cans in the public road. Put them in a gully somewhere. The good roads fever is spreading. In a majority of the counties of South Carolina the movement Is gaining mo mentum. It is an encouraging sign ol the increasing enteilIgence of the peo ple. Poor roads and poverty live to gether.
