FEMALE COLLEGE \ of the Laurensville Female College some : 11 to in duce the Methodist Conference to es tablish the first Methodist Female Col lege in the town Of Laurens. At the . Annn.il Session of Conference, in No vember, IV.:'.. the location for the pro jected college was still undecided upon, hut among the many towns con testing for the honor. Laurens was among the number, and when con- : ference finally designated Spartan burg. Laurens. Greenville, Newberry and Camden as the only towns that would be Considered as contestants, new zeal and energy were kindled in the hearts of the citizens and imme diately Mr. lt. M. Stokes, the editor of the Laurensville Herald, began, with renewed hope, a series of strong editorials In an effort to arouse the people to the importance of having the college located at Laurens. As had been decided upon at the Novem ber session of conference, the com mittee having in c harge the matter of 1 deciding upon the location met in Spartanburg on the 4th of July, 1853. and Laurens' claims were laid before that body. Suffice it to say. however. Laurens failed to gain the prize, and this very fact, perhaps, more than all else, contributed to emphasize the need of such an institution, and con tributions from various leading cit izens began to pour iu upon the ed itor, and among the number were several pointed and able articles writ ten by the late Col. J. P. Hoyt. (father of Col. J. A. Hoyt, late deceased). These articles from the pen of Col. Hoyt. especially, so aroused the cit izens to the imperative need of a first class institution of learning, that sub scription lists were soon in circula tion and it was not long before the necessary funds were subscribed with which to erect the building. The building was finally completed, and I In Just five years from the day the agitation for a college was first begun the Laurensville Female College was opened to the public with a fine corps of teachers, this auspicious day being the second Monday in February. IK.'iS. The Rev. E. T. Buist. I). l>.. was Its first president, assisted by the follow ing corps of teachers: Rev. David Wills, professor of Log ic. Rhetoric and Heiles Letters. Rev. '/.. L. Holmes, professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. Mrs. c. m. Vernon, teacher of the English department ami of French. Miss Sarah C. Pilot, teacher of Mu sic and the ornamental branches. Dr. .lohn W. Simpson was president of the hoard of trustees, and in the announcement of the opening of the college the trustees notified the pub lic that a gentleman teacher of music would be secured as soon as Ho- occa sion demanded it. True? to their promise, or announce ment, sometime during (he adminis tration of Dr. Pulst. Prof. Carl Cus tav Jaeger was added to the faculty as the head of the music department and was succeeded by Prof. Fisher under Dr. Jacobs' first administration. Also, that "('apt. John M. MeCHn tOCk; an elder in the Presbyterian Church, ran accommodate twelve young ladies with hoard. Including fuel, at $10.(1(1 per month." And for years Capt. McCllntOCk's home, as a boarding house for the young lady students, was Inseparable from the college, and stood on the site now oc cupied by the residence of Col. .lames ii. Traynham. Many ladies now liv ing In the town and county cherish fond recollections of the days when they attended the Laurensville Female College and boarded at the "McC'llil toc-k House." Although the college was t uilt by ; jpular subscription <the f-.::;<;s bei - raised almost entirely in the town ? (?<".::.'>? of Laurens) it was placed uu ? of the f ! S Carolina, but was patronized through ? ? . Ii H:. Buist, its first president, mien im: in July. 1S61, aft-.-r having grad uated four classes during l.is admin istration of a little over three yearn, was followed by the Rev. Ferdinn d Jacobs, I). 1?. And although the col lege had a succession cd presidents and widely varying fortunes. Dr. Ja cobs guided its destiny all through the four years of the war. and chiving his administration the college proba bly enjoyed its highest meed of praise and usefulne ss. The atti ndance wan larger, perhaps, during these four years than at any other time during the life of the college. While Hr Ja cobs had no superior in the Mat-* tut a teacher, perhaps, the large attend ance which the college enjoyed durina the war is accounted for In a great measure by Dr. Jacobs' being a na tive of Charleston and those of bet citizens who refugced in the up.coun try came to Laurens. many c f them out of personal regard for Dr. Jacobi . where they or their children could receive the benefits of the splendid educational advantages which Dr. In cobs' school afforded. He resigned the presidency of the college in ,h;i> lv'.r,. after graduating four Classes, and was succeeded by Dr. Samuel I Price, of Virginia, who took ch e go of the school In i860, remaining two years and graduating two classes, Major J. A. Leland next assumed the duties of president and continued in that capacity until isTI, and gave diplomas to three classes. in isTi! Rev. J. R. Riley was made president and continued at the head of the school for four years. During his administration of affairs the o were no graduates: the college became simply a village school. In 1 s70 Colonel James Harrow bo came president but held the position for one year only. There were no graduates. Dr. Ferdinand Jacobs again tool; charge of the school in and con ducting it until 1ST??, graduating one cd ass. In 1880 there was no president. f Professor J. D. Anderson assumed control of the college in 1881, rCOi ganl'/.ed it and remained at its luvet for four years, the school enjoying considerable prosperity (luring thil period. In 1885 Professor It. W. Mllncf be came president for the term of throe years In 1888 Professor W. M. MCCtlSlnil the last president of Hie Institution. took charge, remaining at its head until the college was closed anil the graded school established, Tho col lege was then sold to the town to be used as the building for the City Graded School, the proceeds going Into the building of the First Presbyterian ohurch. 17**? |{H?ii College of Charleston I2*>th Year Regina October I.
