FEMALE COLLEGE \ of the Laurensville Female College some : 11 to in duce the Methodist Conference to es tablish the first Methodist Female Col lege in the town Of Laurens. At the . Annn.il Session of Conference, in No vember, IV.:'.. the location for the pro jected college was still undecided upon, hut among the many towns con testing for the honor. Laurens was among the number, and when con- : ference finally designated Spartan burg. Laurens. Greenville, Newberry and Camden as the only towns that would be Considered as contestants, new zeal and energy were kindled in the hearts of the citizens and imme diately Mr. lt. M. Stokes, the editor of the Laurensville Herald, began, with renewed hope, a series of strong editorials In an effort to arouse the people to the importance of having the college located at Laurens. As had been decided upon at the Novem ber session of conference, the com mittee having in c harge the matter of 1 deciding upon the location met in Spartanburg on the 4th of July, 1853. and Laurens' claims were laid before that body. Suffice it to say. however. Laurens failed to gain the prize, and this very fact, perhaps, more than all else, contributed to emphasize the need of such an institution, and con tributions from various leading cit izens began to pour iu upon the ed itor, and among the number were several pointed and able articles writ ten by the late Col. J. P. Hoyt. (father of Col. J. A. Hoyt, late deceased). These articles from the pen of Col. Hoyt. especially, so aroused the cit izens to the imperative need of a first class institution of learning, that sub scription lists were soon in circula tion and it was not long before the necessary funds were subscribed with which to erect the building. Riley was made president and continued at the head of the school for four years. During his administration of affairs the o were no graduates: the college became simply a village school. In 1 s70 Colonel James Harrow bo came president but held the position for one year only. There were no graduates.
