C. July 0, 1805. An election takes place all ovor tho State on tho third Tuesday In August for delegates to a Constitutional Con vention. It so happens that a fooling prevallod for somo time that It would be best that tho white people of tho _State, s~houid .cast a unitod ballot for delegates to that convention. The rea sons for this wish were and arc patont; notably that tho white poople in all political matters for thirty flvo yoars had shown a solid compact front It was so in 1800 and it was so in 1870, and un til tho advent of Till man. With Till in. u> came, it seems, irreconcilable di vision into factions. This factional di vision Is a fuct and must be so regarded and as a fact It cannot bo avoided. As wo have before urged tho modorato men In every county in tho State havo deprecated tho conditions oxisting, and have mndo patriotic appeals that the factional warfare should cease. It was considered that if tho division walls wore broken down in tho emer gency of choosing dologatcs to tho constitutional convention, thoro would probably follow an era of a unitod white peopln beforo the assault of TUlinan ' i colleagues, upon their own hoifV \iold. Fora tlmoappearances indicated that tho desired lostoration of harmony and union would bo ac complished. It would now soom that the bopo of tho modorato men In tho SI ale and tho States best well-wishers is by no moans to bo realized. Tho ma jority faction pronounco unmistakably, by the action of. a number of countlos t-iff tho last two wookstbat a restoration of poaco is not to bo dosired. Wo nro q?t surprised. Poaco would imperil tho chances of many bosses for tho spoils of ohTco and thoy therefore do r'Niiininfi1'" war porpctual. The majority are lu a position to name torms? wheth er it shall bo poaco or whother it shall bo war. In tho moan while a c-rri?h" stale of things oxists. Tho minority are oxcludod from the councils of tho majority and donied particpation lu the honors and oftloos in tho gift of tho organization. But this is not the eccon trlc point. Thoy arc told that thoy must go no whore olso; form no other association; romuln howors of wood and slaves to tho dominant element, or bo denouncod as Independents, traitors and enemies of tbo white man. Like dogs thoy are to bo beaten and lashed and as dogs lick their masters. They are not oven as Lazarus to havo tho crumbs from tho rich man's table.? Since 1800 this has boon tho condition. And wo urge as a matter of history and t undeniable fact that, thoro has been no oholco with those who opposed the nomination of Tillman In 1800. Those who supported Barle, Bratton, Shep ^JpjU-'d and Haskell have boon classed and oxcludod from all share or partic ipation In tho control of tho socallcd democratic organization. Thoy nro not wantod; and thoy aro wanted. Thoy aro told that thoy must march up to polls'and vote llko littlo men for the nominees solocted by the bosses of those who declare themselves as the organl/.od democracy. This is a fair statement of tho caso, as wo hold In l South Carolina. In Laurons County thoro has boon loss prctonco of recog nition of tho nnti oloment than in any county in tho Stato. Now then what under these circumstances, aro tho BKj&nse.r vat i vos to do in roforonco to tho approaching election of delogatos to the Constitutional Convention'. L^^o be more accurate, tho choico of HWarulidatos by a primary which is in \ fact tho oloction, wo answer; hands oft', and for these reasons: First: A partizan or boss voto will ^?ooptttlnlyr, bn cast; tho majority voto will be cast by dictation; qualification, moral or intellectual will not bo consid ered; men will b\j set up as straw can didates to bo votod for whose views on the provisions of tho proposed constitu tion aro not known, or who havo no views other than tho boss' ideas, and this will bo as clear as tho noonday sun by only four candidates offering, pihese candldatos seloctod by bosses; whereas; in an opon primary it is fair to presume that a number of party mon would aspire to represont tho party. Second: The antl faction has no ma [Vthinery'"by which to soloot a sharo of ' IboN-managers as provided, and it is ,not likely to havo; thoro is no leader or ["leaders, of tho socallod antls, thero is no organization and thoro does not ap pear any probability of any. Third: if under these circumstances I. you voto in the primary you truly join the dominant faction, adopt all Its poli cies, past, prosont and futuro and arc bound by. Its action. You thoroby 'yousolf to stand by whatever 'constitution Is framed although you are blind as a bat as to what is pro posed, (you not bolng in tho secrots of fho dominant loadors) whother your ('State Ip to be ruined or not. Fourth: If thoro were hope of your voto amounting to anything?that is, I if thero were a dozon candidates and ?pucked tlckot, then you might rbutas it is 00-08-100 to nothing you havo to voto a proscribed [tlckot your voto is a sham. Fvcn if man is choson, it is a choico of four master proscribed to you. ifth: This oloction Is not a purty ?tion: tho democratic party hus king to do with It as such, If you bo leamish or tondcrfooted, about four party connection. Sixth: Tho tost of a man's party illogianco is tried only when ho votes tgalnst his party. In tho primary lOthlng but socallcd democrats can ,-oto and if you don't voto, you have mly hoi pod a good sot of democrats to tmo f h? candidates. Seventh: Whon tho oloction comes August yon still havo your chance ^f you havo a registration tlckot) and voto for any ticket you ploaso. To havo sot down those views as ily as wo can. We want overy i'( . ! or blas; we do !t that tho H)ber, conservative thinking men may stand "like stonowrdls" noon a conscientious exercise of duty leaving the conse quences to a highor power. Wo havo talked and written and begged for peace and harmony and a restoration of good fooling. Wo are repulsed at every advance Wo uor any self-re specting conservatives will obey tho lash of a party or fuctlon that ignore* our full equality. No! "Not upon com pulsion, Hal." v Whilo as a matter of fact tho opposi tion to tho Til I man Faction or socallcd democratic organization In this State, doos not tuko on an organized form, they tho antis, conservatives, or oppos ition faction aro logically in what may bo tho Democratic party in this State. In fact, there is no conservative party, and thorcforo it cannot tako action or bo hold responsible for anything, as it cannot bo found. This much wo say, as wo havo hoard that TiiK Ajm'KKTi SKit is frequently quoted as advising this or that in tho omorgonoy of put ting candidates In tho Hold to ropro sent this county in tho upproaohing constitutional convention. Tho Ad vkktisku desires to bo perfectly un derstood. Tho Irby committee bad no jurisdiction to handlo tho matter. It had under tho rules of tho party no jurisdiction oxcopt to manage and di rect- tho party machinery in elections whon as a party it should bo antag onized. In making a constitution for al! tho pcoplo and for all time presu mably, wo do not put party machinery to work. Naturally, tho muchinory of tho party being at hand, it would bo available for convenience, and wo do not quarrel with it. It is us it Is. Hut no democrat is bound by it. Act as ho pleases, voto or not voto in tho prima ries, run for the Convention or voto as you plcaso, your party allegiance Is not involved and cannot bo questioned. * * * Hard Lines in Newbcrry. Thieves raided tho potato patch of Brother Aull, editor of tbo Nowborry Herald and Nows. it is getting tight times in Nowborry. Brothor Aull is on tho war path and threatens the "Mississippi plan" along with Senator Tlllman. Thero is littlo choico be tween a )3,00 poll tax arid a shot-gun. * * * r Luurons has challenged our base ball hoys for a gamo lu the near future. Thoy aro to play home talent. Wo aro glad of this, for wo don't want to see any more importations along this line. Wo hopo to report a victory for our boys.?Press and Hoportor (Prosperity) * * * At somo sort of u mongrel how-dy-do at Fdgoficld, Senator Tlllman and ox Govornor Shoppard wore present.? Gov. Tlllman acknowledged, with a dodge, that It was ho who proposed a throe dollar poll tax lor tho coining convention. That will disfranchise twenty thousand poor white men in this State. That weaklings should be found in Spartanburg County in such llocks is a fair commentary on tho times. That tho Jury of inquest in tho Con stabulary slaughter of citizens did not bring out tho facts and lind a verdict is discreditable. Street Leiter-Boxes.
