The famous little pills known as DeWitt's Little Early Risers not only cleanse the system but they strengthen the action of the liver and rebuild the tissues support ing that organ. Baltimore, Md., Feb. 11?To day marked the most cheerlul advance Baltimore has yet made in emerging from the dark cloud ........ ;? i... ? iu u,y niw (;r?ai conflagration. An incident, that, in spired the whole community with tremendous confidence was the resumption of business by the banks, deposits being received and checks honored 111 the usual way. The progress which has been made in the work of clearing the debris from the streets in the burned district seems almost magical. Baltimore stree', which at, sunrise was a confused mass of rubbish, is practically clean, and likewise South street, one of the great banking thoroughfares. All through the financial district preparations are being made to open sales and vaults. In no instance have the contents of any vault been seriously damaged. The Chamber of Commerce has been exceedingly active today in sending broadcast to every centre of trade in this country ,,and Europe the assurance that Baltimore is even now in condi t inn 4 tf) I runo.wif ? * 1 1 ..v/.. vw i i unnav i) i\ll grain and foreign trade and that all other lines of business will be restored to their normal channels within the next two or three months. Many merchants and manufacturers, whose places of business were swallowed up in the contlagration, have signed contracts lor rebuilding, and there are on all sides the greatest sigtiB of activity in this respect. All are simply waiting for the city to clear the streets of debris and give permission to the owners of the ground to take possession. A composite estimate of the total loss from the fire by twenty five expert reoresentatives of all the leading insurance com panics, outside of Baltimore, places the figures at $85,000,000. Some of them think that the total loss will be reduced to $70,000,000, as much salvage is being dug out of the ruins which was thought to have been destroyed. The loss to insurance companies is estimated by the same experts at 75 per cent of the total loss. The five greatest tires on re ord, reckoned by destruction of property, are: Chicago fire of Oct. 8 and 9, 1871, $192,000,000. Pans fires,May,1871,$ 100,000,000. Moscow fire, of September 14 19, 1872, $75,000,000. Tendency of the Times. The tendency of medical science is toward preventive measures. It has been fully demonstrated that pneumonia, one of tho most dangerous diseases that medical men have to contend with, can be prevented by the use of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. Pneumonia always results from a oold or from an attack of influenza (grip), and it has been observed that this remedy counteracts any tendency of these diseases toward pneumonia. This has been fully proven in many thousands of cases in which this remedy has been used during the great prevalence of colds and grip in recent years, and can be relied upon witn implicit confidence. Pneumonia often results from a slight cold when no danger is apprehended until itis suddenly discovered that there is fever and difficulty in breathing and pains in the chest, then it is announced that the patient has pneumonia. Be on the safe side and take Chamberlain's Cough Remedy as soon as the eold is contracted. It always cures. For sale by J. F. Mackey A Co., druggists. * London fire, September 2 6, $53,652,500. Hamburg lire, May 5-7, 1842, $35,000,000. The great fire in Chicago began Sunday evening, October 8,1871. The burned territory covered square miles, the extreme length of the area was 3J milts it ml one mile at the widest point. Ol the buildings burned 2.400 were stores and factories. \)ver 98,000 persons were rendered homeless, 60,000 of whom were oared for by charitable and State aid, 4.000 temporary shelters be ing erected within a month. The contributions amounted to $4, 200,000. The loss ot lite numbered 250*due to the lire and sub?sequent exposure. The monetary loss was $190,000,000, $4. 000,0t)0 being allowed for salvage on foundation walls; the subsequent in erruption ot business, shrinkage in real estate values, and other causes attendant upon such disasters made the total loss about $290,000,000. Over fifty fire insurance companies were made insolvent through their losses. Progress of the Race. Early last Sunday morning the Booker T. Washington Social Cluh, in the Exchange Building, Haverhill, Massachusetts, was raided by a squad of twelve po lieemen and thirty men were captured. The police had to break iu the door to get at the gamblers, who were arrested but afterwards released on bail. In this raid the police seized two slot machines, cards, dice and a small amount of money. In the afternoon City Marshal McLaughlin, of ilaverill, with a squad ot four policemen, again visited the place and seized 100 bottles ot lager beer, 10 quarts of whiskey, 3 quarts of gin, 1 pint of brandy, 1 quart of wine, 1 quart of rum. 1 tray, 45 glasses and 5 empty beer cases. It is not explained by the Boston Herald, which conveys this interesting informs tion, why the Haverhill Club should have been named for Booker Washington, nor is anything said about the complexion of its members. Wejudge, how ever, from the fact that a part of the paraphernalia seized is used in these parts in the playing ot the great Afro-American game of craps that the club is composed of colored persons, and if so they appear to be maintaining in Massachusetts some of the qualities of the race which have been so fully developed in the South ?News and Courier.
