Figures Showing the Chance of Democracy in Next Flection CharlpB W.Dayton ban Rent on t in "Democracy" the following fnrocaof nf nanorul lnforojt Tlio Democrats are hopeful?-more than hopeful?confident of carrying the presidential election in the coming year is apparent to every observer of political events. That they have reason on which to base their confidence is as plain to every one who lias taken the trouble to examine the figures in the returns in recent presidential elections. Examination of those figures will show that of| the -ITt> electoral Votes to be oa?t , j the Democrats can sifelv rely upon 215, while the R'publicans can at the utmost claim to be | sure of 1(50. This is conceding j that there are 13 doubtful states, with 101 votes. Now, of these I 1 101 votes it would be necessary I for the Republicans to obtain 7!) | to possess tin* 23J) votes to elect ! their candidate, while 25 votes would he all that were necessary to pive the Democrats victory. Ilero is a table of the states the Democrats claim, the states! conceded to the Republicans, and the doubtful states : DEM. KEI\ A la ha m a 11 ... A rkansas !? .... Colorado 15 .... Delaware 3 ... Thousands of Re- < publicans are alarmed by the I vagaries of our "unsafe," spectac- I ular president. Influential Democratic leaders will guide the party into ways pointed out by % the leRsons of the paRt. In looking over thoae facts and figures, does it seem more probable that the Republicans cau gain the 79 votes needed by ihem than the Democrats shall obtain 25? Is there any cause for wonder that the Democrats are hopeful; any cause for wonder that they are confident? It may be objected that Now York, with its thirty-nine electo ral votes, should be placed in the column of doubtful states. Grant ing for the moment that this should be so, the table would give to the Democrats 175 votes, to the Republicans 100, and the number of doubtful votes would be 130. The Republicans would ptill have to obtain 78 of the doubtful votes, while the Democrats would need but 63. But New York this year is not a doubtful state, as Democrats and Republicans alike know. With a candidate such as the Democrats should nominate and a platform such as they should present, it is sure to take its place in the democratic column. A Cure for Eczema. The greatness of little thiugs finds frequent illustration in railroad operations. A case has just been discovered where nine years ago an error of 5 cents was made in the computation of a rate sheet between two eiven points, says the Railway and Engineering Review It was found upon investigation that as a result of this error the two railroads operating between the two points have lost upwards of $17,000 during that time. This shows why railroads are so strenuously opposed to what are considered inconsequential reductions in rates. The business in question was simply the trallic between Dallas, Tex., and a small town a few miles away. It is in multiplication of little things that so seriously affect railway revenues. The loss of a fraction of a cent per hundred pounds mean thousands, if not millions, of dollars, to the railroads, and makes the difference between profit and loss. It is only by the most zealous of care that railroads are able to maintain their revenues on a paying basis and it iN this reason that the v lue of little things is so well understood by the railway officials generally.
