One Year, ... $1.00 Six Months, - - .50 Three Mor Us, - - .25 IN ADVANCE. Wednesday, January 13, 1004 One man was killed by another on the streets of Lancaster during the holidays. It is said the dead man had made threats against his slayer. The man who slew did not resort to the protection of the law ; he armed himself, went on the street, met , his alleged enemy and shot. The dead man had, it seems, a bad reputation, but when he was killed lie was unarmed. [ Two house painters met on a crowded section of Columbia's main thoroughfare last Friday. One is said to have threatened the other. The man who claims to have been threatened Jid not 1 apply to the sheriff or a magis trate to have the threatener ar- 1 rested or put under a peace bond. Me armed himself and went on the street. Meeting his ' enemy he accosted him, intimating his readiness to fight ; then ' he drew his pistol and fired with >he intent of taking life. At the first shot he inflicted a serious wound ; the wounded man turned and fled. Again and yet again the armed assailant fired , at the back of his fleeing enemy with murderous intent. When I the wounded painter was being helped to a doctor's office by friends, his assailant walked on , the opposite side of the street, , pistol in hand, eyeing him. The man who was shot was un- , armed. The man who attempted to take his life, who attempt ( ed to shoot him in the back, ( says he thought he was acting in self-defense. This is simple . anarchy ; it is lynching without the mob. How long will public sentiment permit it??TheState. Sully lluys a Seat. New York, Jan. 7. ? Daniel J.
