Judge Neal refused to change tho sentence at the request of coun sel and then the prisoner asked to say a word. lie made a piteous appeal for a change of sentence, saying he was so old and feeble that it would kill him to work on the chain gang, but ask ed that he might bo hired out instead. lie did not deny that ho stole or make excuses, except to say that he was feeble and had been 'douched in the head," and he was sure it would kill him to do the hard and constant work required on the chain gang. The appeal moved the spectators and the court and the sentence was changed so that the old man j could be hired out by the commissioners instead of being sent I ik I ho roads. The change was creditable to Judge Neal. Chicago, Dec. 22.?Charged with operating in the centre of a fashionable shopping district of Chicago a distillery contrary to government regulations, five officers and instructors of the Columbus laboratories were today arrested by United States deputy marshals. One of the live prisoners was United Stales Commissioner Solomon. The laboratories are located in a skyscraper oflice building on State sroet at the corner of Washington. The arrests were made on complaint of United Statep Revenue Agent Nutt, the technical charge being "displaying the sign of a distiller and making a mash, fit for the distillation, in a place other than a duly authorized distillery." Later Prof. Norton said : "Today's developments were no sur prise to us. We had contemplated that such action would be taken, and were perfectly willing. As a matter of fact we have technically violated a law. We do make mash in our academy. That is against the law.
