(J. lie left here at 6 o'clock Saturday morning accompanined by Mrs. Junes; with a rather imperfect idea of| roads and terries, and before he j reached Spartanburg he had se ; cured data that would be of I interest to the promoters of good | roads. Before leaving, Mr.James had taken copious notes from the! map in the room of the telegraph i editor, and af'er that he had been ! coached bv Mr S. V. Kendrick, | The Observer's machinist, who came from down about theCa j tawba and naturally advised the locomabilist to run through his baliwick. He represent en Pineville, Fort Mill. All went well until he got oil the good roads of Mecklenburg and struck the route outlined by Mr. Kandrick. Then his trouble began. He stuck in one beauti ful stretch of red clay and il look six negroes to lilt the locomobile out ol the mire. The machine has stuck so deep in the mud that the hubs ol the wheels were covered and the engine was shove it. Mr. James Ictt. the m udiine there and scouted through the neighboring corn fields to get a su!ficient number of hands to hit him out of trouble, lie finally abandoned Mr. Kendii 'k's and made a detour of 20 miles in an effort to fi \ the road recomm *nded by 'tie editor, llo finally came into it at King's Mountain, add thereafter 1; 1 -i tair sailing.
