roads. Before leaving, Mr.James
had taken copious notes from the!
map in the room of the telegraph i

the locomabilist to run through
his baliwick. He represent en

Hill and Vorkville to be a

to locomobiles, though such a
thing had never before gone
that way. The telegraph editor

Saturday afternoon Mr. Kendrick
received a telegram from Spur

Mr. Kendrick did not know j
what to say, so no answer was
sent. Nothing was heard Irom
Mr. James until lust night, wheni
ne showed up lor work. Then I
he briefly told of his trip Leaving

hour on good roads, he reached
Spartanburg at 10 10 that night.
All went well until he got oil the
good roads of Mecklenburg and
struck the route outlined by Mr.
Kandrick. Then his trouble
began. He stuck in one beauti
ful stretch of red clay and il look
six negroes to lilt the locomobile
out ol the mire. The machine
has stuck so deep in the mud that
the hubs ol the wheels were covered
and the engine was shove it.
Mr. James Ictt. the m udiine there
and scouted through the neighboring
corn fields to get a su!ficient
number of hands to hit
him out of trouble, lie finally
abandoned Mr. Kendii 'k's and
made a detour of 20 miles in an
effort to fi \ the road recomm *nded

came into it at King's Mountain,

The Kendrick route called
for 125 mites, and Mr. James
succeeded itt making it in IV

arrived at 8 40. The machine
had all sorts of experiences,
climbed foils, waded through
deep mud. went over ro< ks ami
all sorts of obstructions, yet

was perhaps the best lest that a
locomobile hn? been put to in
this part of the country.
