\ . 1 8ALT A PNEUMONIA CURB.I Discovery of Remedy for Malady | ix Announced. After experimenting lor several mouths I)r. W. Byron Coakley, of j this city, has discovered, he believes.a method of curing pneumoui.\ by means of sodium chloride, says tho Chicago Tribune. The j manner of using thin chemical I I and the apparatus required in itsi application, were made public | in a paper read by the doctor be- J lore the American Medical As j Diioi -.if in n ill Sr.riA ?no"i M .. CO 11 ' veotion last wopk. Flis theory has j been bittsr'y attacked and defen-j clod by those who are considered: authorities on tho subject.. The proposition of Dr Coaklev j is that*'ull bacteria ?Iirec113r 01 : indirectly concerned in the production of pneumonia succumb to an 8 per cent sodium chloride! solution at temperatures ranging) from 120 to 140 decrees Karon | beit." Thai this is true is not do- J nied, hut the value of the discov-1 ery, the doctor says is in the! method and apparatus that he | used in applying the solution. In his paper and experiments before the Saratoga convention Dr. Coaklev used an instrument invented by himsef, called thei "organometer." This overcomes nil objections to the use of a li-i quid injection, he explained, in that it reached th? diseased por-! lions of the lungs without any injury to those organs. It does this by the uro of h line gold needle that punctures the lungs and spreads the solution. When t he j lungs have been reached thei sodium chloride is pumped into them and takes immediate effect. The heated solution when if reaches the bacteria, the physician explains, first inhibits their 41 1 *1 .1 4 1. growui ana men uesimys mem, the salt acting all the time as an [ antiseptic of an effective type. It increases the white blood cells i in the infected parts, the doctorj holds, thus strengthening the diseased organ, while it destroys and j aids in the carrying away of the dead micro organisms. After the salt solution cools to the body temperature, it is absorbed 'nto the blood and does not I clog up thd lungs. In doing this it protects the red ccrpuslcsj against destruction by the pois . ons of pneumonia and its.accumu1 _ 4 i* 1. * . \. . ! laiion oi aosorpuon uas ucen . nar?ed t,endoRmosiav by I>r.j Ponklev. and is declared by him j to be effective. The washing out, of the hi by means of salt solutions has been tried before, but in praCti . callv every case the patient has ' been unable to stand the treat-j xnent. The inability to use solu j lion was urged against Dr. (,'oakley's method, until the demon- | stration before the association ' allowed its success. Wh?n the paper whs ren'l all Saratoga it created a furor among | the physicians, and was attacked i by many physicians, but has found , a number oi defenders.
