Special to The State. Winnsboro Aug. 9.?Thursday morning Mr. (J. W. Crawford, one of Winnsboro's leading business men, started oul for a iox hunt. When about two or three miles from town, Mr. Cr wlord who was riding in his buggy met Peter McGriflf with a load ot wood comming to town. Mi. Crawford asked the negro to haul him some wood to apply on a debt he owed him. McGritl denied the debt. This brought Ion hot words and when McGritl | picked up a rock Mr. Crawlord took Ids whip and trot out ol the buggy in ordei <> defend himself, i McGrill then closed in on him, | hitting him with a rock. Whereupon Mr. Crawlord drew his pistol and fired a fatal shot, striking McGrilF in the abdomen, trum which wound lie died in a lew hours.
