expected to be taken up on the
proposition, but Miss Gertrude
Epperson, of Sumter, stepped up

Killed in the Road.

Winnsboro Aug. 9.?Thursday
morning Mr. (J. W. Crawford,
one of Winnsboro's leading business
men, started oul for a iox
hunt. When about two or three
miles from town, Mr. Cr wlord
who was riding in his buggy met
Peter McGriflf with a load ot
wood comming to town. Mi.
Crawford asked the negro to haul
him some wood to apply on a
debt he owed him. McGritl
denied the debt. This brought
Ion hot words and when McGritl
| picked up a rock Mr. Crawlord
took Ids whip and trot out ol the
buggy in ordei <> defend himself,
i McGrill then closed in on him,
| hitting him with a rock. Whereupon
Mr. Crawlord drew his
pistol and fired a fatal shot, striking
McGrilF in the abdomen,
trum which wound lie died in a
lew hours. Mr. Crawford surrendered
himselt to the sherill at

through his attorney tor bail,
