During the last lour d\; - rhat section ot the count rv ha?, been shaken hv a stries of earthquakes that is or tradition ot 'in* I'aritio coast, and (1: continuances ->f (he ?!: turhanc^s and I he increasing severity ot the shocks have so terrorized the inhabitants that they are leaving tor other j.?*i*t -as rapidly as pos sible, and ? \on now the village is almost entirely deserted. The disturbances began on Sunday evening with a shock, which caused several thousand dollars' worth ot damage to property in the village and the surrounding country, continuing through the reminder ot Sunday night and nionday. On Tuesday night, beginning at 11:10 o'clock, there wasjanoth er series of seven shocks, all ol which were light. In action these disturbances resembled the waves on a po'nd of water. The most severe shock of the entire series occurred at 11:30 o'clock this morning. Hills were shaken and twisted to their foundations, and the valleys trembled and rolled like the surface of the ocean. Great fissures were run deep in .the earth, hills and knolls appeared in level valleys, springs of water appeared in places that had been dry. and the general topography ot the valley was greatly changed in many respects. The disturbance .had no general direction, but was what is known as a "twisiei.'* It was preceded bv a rumbling like that ol distant thunder, which increased until the earth began to rise and twist and the hills began to tremble. When the first warninv -oun<! of tlif approaching disaster lh terror-stricken people rushed into the street- and sought places o! safety in vacant lots and roads, 'vhile many lied toward the neighboring hills. The tir-t vi brat ions were similar to the preceding disturbance in direction and ell'ect. hut they were immediately followed by (lie most terrific shock ever expoiiet.ced in this section ot the State.
