The most gigantic combine in existence is the one receutlj formed of all the steel, wire and hoop companies of the country It is called the United States Steel Company and has $300,000,000 preferred stock and $300,000,000 common stock and $400,000,000 of bonds, making a total capitol of one billion dollars. J. Pierpont Morgan, the great New York financier, engineered the combine. Congressional Appropriations. The Spanish war has taught us how to be extravagant beyond the wildest conceptions of former days. The total appropriations passed by the present congress, in its two seasons, aggregated $1,457,269,457. This is but 110,000,000 less than the appropriations of the preceding congress which provided for the expenses of the Spanish war. Thus the total of appropriations seems enormous as compared with the cost of the government only ton years ago, and yet important lagislation has failed to pass which would have involved an immenso increase. The Nicaragua Canal bill and the ship subsidy bill will both probably bo left unfinished.?Presbyterian. Exposition Rills. Tho senate has passed the Louisiana Purchase Expositioy appropriation of five millions and the appropriation of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the South Carolina and tho West Indian Exposition at Charleston. The bill was thus amended at tho last moment by a provision closing both expositions on Sundays.?Presbyte 1J illl, The Plague In Africa.
