Murphy, recently appointed 1 end of the New York Police t e[ artment, is a physical wonder, in hat for the last 10 years ho I as not tasted food. lie smokes .villi his friends, talks with his f-ienda, and is a pleasant com 1 anion generally, but when meal tin e comes he is compelled to retire to a private room and j -u t ii p specially prepared food i n his stomach through a rilver t it.2 inserted below his esopha1 iv. ( nlor.el Murphy's case has att;a ted the attention and excited tiu wonder of the medical world. m 1'i 1889, in the midst of nn excit i.n political campaign, ho was attacked with acute indigestion, > i.ich caused a stricture of th? W* tsophagus. lie was unable tf swallow anything. To prolong l.is life eminent physicians decid<d upon what they informed, bin might bo a fatal experiment. They decided to cut into his t iroat and afterward:* remove hi* f omach. It was first decided tnat his stomach should have rest t nd for 50 days ho was fed unnaturally. In describing this operation Colonel Murphy has told how th<> physicifrns would gather about ^ his cot each morning expecting; V ^ to see him die. Ho refused to t<ke an anaesthetic even when t e operation became one of the i iost painful under the knife and c ??tted with his doctors wLilo it W v as going on. Colonel Murphy has told how , le was y forced morning aftef looming to swallow a yard of I'exible rubber tubing until it reached his stomach. ThrouglC tiiis tubing the doctors would ] our a solution intended to clean tae stomach and heal the ulccra t id parta. The medicine waul highly poiponoup, end had the tube failod to reach the proper plr.ce or had it been displaced the patient would have been dead in p f?.w minutes. I luring this operation one of the doctors always held a watch, f >r it was dangerous to leave the f >! At the end of 60 days the stoni^^ncl was pronounced healed, hut i ie ?ntime the colonel almost died .NCAS O from starvation. He had been a man physically sound, weighing 240 pounds After the operation h was reduced to 86 pounds. He Weighs today about 90 pounds. After a consultation of the most famous doctors of the country it was decided that the only thing that could keep Col. Murphy from starving to death was to cut into the abdomen and insert a silver tube. He was told that there was iittle chance for him to survive. "Go ahead,',' he said. I have faced death before and I'll do it again. If I die I'll forgive you." The wound from the incision healed within a few weeks and the operation was successful. Since that time no food has thus passed his palate. In spite of his physical disability the new commissioner has attended to political duties with a carefulness which has won the admiration of all his fellow-leaders in Tammany. lie has set the pace, in fact, for his associates in the Democratic organization.
