Thomas Funderburk at Dndley was totally dostroyed by tiro Tuesday night last, together with nearly all of their furniture, family supplies and wearing apparel. The fire was discovered by one of his daughters between 11 and 12 o'clock, she having been woke up by the smoke in her room which was in the "L" over the cook room. Mr. Funderburk was in Monroo that night and consequently very little of the contents of the dwelling was saved, Mrs. Funderbitrk and the girls being so badly frightened. Throe feather beds, a few chairs, a bureau and piano was all that was saved, the entire family having lost their entiro wardrobe ami their shoes, except the night clothes that they had on .at the time and the things that one of the daughters threw out of her room before slio abandoned it to .the angry,' surging flames. The loss will foot up probably not less than $3,000 including dwolling and furniture, with only $1000 insurance on the dwelling and none on the furniture. The insurance was in the. old ./Etna of Hartford represented by Mr. A. J. Clark at Lancaster, who had been injuring the property for about 10 years. Returned to Town From Which He Had Been Expelled. Th? ??*?#. Greenwood, Feb. 21.?James W. Tolbort has mot the fate he courted. Ho was shot today on the stroetsof McCormick, wliore ho had been told that lie must not go or elso ho would have to' die. Before he was shot down he fired two shots at a young visitor to the town of MeCormick?a man who had nothing to do with the row going on between Tolbort and the citizens of McCormick. Both shots took effect, one in the body and one in tho hip. This young man, a Mr. Martin, was visiting his brother-in-law, M. L. B. Sturkcy, and was simply walking by when Tolbort, according to tho statements of those present, pulled out a pistol and fired at him. Immediately a fusilade began, with Tolbort. as tho target for all tlvp* available nil >oting iron's in and around that vicinity. Tolbert owns quite a lot of laiul around McCorniick and s.une real estate in the town lie lias never attended to the routing of this property in person until tliis year; ho will likolv nevor do so again. About a week ago ho went down to McC ormick determined to stay. In a few days ho received an anonymous letter advising him to leave. He refused to attach any importance to the letter and went on about his business of looking after his farm lands. Today he was approached by a crowd of men and told to leave. According to the statement of tho best men present he at tempted to argue the matter and to let it he known that he intended to stay. Just about or at this time young Martin passed by the crowd on the ,.i1 1 C a \ - . a i ouier siuo 01 uie street, ami seeing him, Tolbert pulled out his pistol and fired twice at Martin. As stated above, the shooting at Tolbert then commenced, only two shots taking olFect, botli in the hotly. Martin w:ii hit in the hip and in the body. There were no more shots fired at Tolbert alter ho fell. He was carried to the home of Mr. Pick Hollingsworth, and it was stated tonight that a heavy guard had been placed around tho house Young Martin was carried into tie- store of his brother-in-law, M L. B. Sturkoy, and his wounds immediately attended to b}' Dr. Molld.au. Even it Tolbert's wounds do i.ot prove tatul, lii.s life is still in danger. Tho general opinion is that if Martin should die there would be no chance lor Tolbert. hate this afternoon a phono mes sage from McCormick stated that a good many people from the country were coming in town, and the universal opinion was that Tolbert. had better be moved. His physician said that.he could be moved, and his brother, R. R. Tolbert, expects to go tonight to have him moved to Augusta or some place of safety. dim Tolbert, as lio is known, has been obnoxious to the people of McOormick over since the l'hoemx riot in the fall of 189S He rendered himself doubly so by the celebrated ''conspiracy case" sg dnst some of tho very best cit izens of tho place in the spring of 1899. Ho has made several at tempts to go back there, but every time ho was told quietly but none tho less firmly that ho could not stay in the town of McCormiek. Despite theso warnings he has persisted, and it seems now that he will give up his life for his rashness. * The people of MeOormick are very cool and very determined. He has been told to sfav awav. and all wonld h*> well. hut to try to come hack there would mean trouble. The trouble haa come. The Story From McCormlck.
