KANSAS SALOONS WRECKED RY MRS. NATION'S ARMY. Fhe Hundred Incensed People Smash Plate Glass, Mirrors, Pottles of Liquor and Other ri<L * _ i nings. Topeka, Kas., Fob. 17.?Mrs. Carrie Nation put in a busy Sunday in Topokn to-day, and a3 ? resuk'tho capital city has experienced more genuine excitement than can bo remembered by the oldest inhabitants. Mrs Nation literally crammed the dav with_ thrilling episodes. Slie succeeded in having the contents of a no torious joint smashed, broke into a cold storage plant whore a number of fine bars had been stored away for safety, and demolished them, addressed a, large mass meeting of men and women, and was arrested four times. The last "timo that the law laid its hands upon her was when Mrs. Nation emerged from the church where the mass meeting had been held. To night Mrs. Nation an nounces that she will begin tomorrow whore sho left ofl' today, and will not rest until all the joints in Topoka have been closed. This morning at 0 o'clock, just as the big bell on the Church of the Assumption tower was striking the hour, Mrs. Nation sallied forth from the State house grounds at the head of 500 men and women, all armed with hatchets and and moved on the joints of the city. Nobody but Mrs. Nation kn< \v vwiat plans she had laid. In the crowd wore a large number of students of Swash? burn college, some of the minis t< rs of the city and a nuinbor of professional and business . men. The crowd marched in |^P perfect military order, the men and women following their recognized leader, whom they seemed to trust implicitly The company marched silently out of the State house grounds, down Kansas avenue, to ?he placo on East Seventh street, kept by Ed Murphy, where the work of demolition began. Mrs. Nation, brandish[ II \ ft ?1 ?IA1I' U O 1 /lllAt l.AA.1/,,1 * !"? ^ onslaught, uttering words of deprecation against the joint keepers as she sent her weapon through tho first plate glass window at hand Others fol lowed her lead quickly. Amid the shouts of the crusaders and the commands of the police present, trying to protect the property, glass went.crashing to the ground on all sides. At the police station she wan released promptly and hurried tHink to hor work. She entered a livery barn, in whioh some bars had been stored, and smashed thorn. Then, at the head of 25 of her stoutest hearted iN6AS j*r LAK followers, sho went, to the Moserf cohl storugo plant and enteredl upon ii soaroh for liquor that she i thought hud been stored there.' She stayed this time for j ' two hours, and finally her bond waa signed by one of the joint, keepers of the city, a negro politician. I i The gathering of the crusaders at the state house grounds before daylight was conducted with thoi i utmost ee?recy. Very few knew about tho intended raid, except |' those going to take part in it. At 4 .'50 o'clock silent forms were hurrying across to the state house,, where sentinels of the army vi ere ' posted. These required each , comer to give an account of him-. . i self. Finally the army was massed in the dark, di?inal'corri- ; dor under the east steps ot the i cnpitol building. Two men came with great nun- I ing picks, and others had axes and sledge hammers. The women, ; ! who composed one fifth of then party, carriod bright, new hatchjets. "Don't pay any attention to them " i Forward came the battering I ram and the big plate glass win- i ?lo\\* was smashed into a thousand fragments. Dozens of men then ru.-died on the building armed with their axes and soon had the iloors and window frames cut entirely awav. Then with an ex * % < ill Dm t choer the crowd burst into the building.
