Kingstree, Dec. 28?Early this morning, as business people wer# entering upon their duties for the day, it was whispered around that the dispensary had again been robbed and that Dispenser E. M. Player had been "held up" and relieved of over $1,800 in cash just before daylight this morning. Mr. Player, it appears, had related full particulars to Mr. li. L. Stutls, town marshal. Mr. Stutts 1*1 he and Mr. Lefean w?r% in the dispensary last night with Mr. Player until nearly midnight, counting up Monday's f-ales of liquor ; that he went to bod about midnight, ami was aroused by Mr. Player about 5 o'clock this morning, who stated that he had boon robbed, and gave the following particulars : Player stated that he heard romeone calling him from the i _! J *1 ? l* * r.inBiae, ai me oacicaoor of tho dispensary; that he opono-1 the door and was immediately covered by two guns in tho bunds r.f marked men. who demanded 1 is money or his life, and, being up armed and unprepared for any Mich emergency, he was powerleas, and offered no resistance, pimply saying, ' Gentlemena, I ia in your power." Two others, making four men in all, then came forward and entered the dispensary, and took all the contents of tho safe and two bags of liquors, and deliberately walked off, telling Mr. player to be careful and not give any alarm for at least 30 min utes, or his life would be in danger. As goon as Mr. Player thought they had left ho ran to Stutts' house, which is directly in fr.int of the dispensary. Mr. Stutts says that after being aronsed he distinctly heard the buggies going across Black river bridge, which is od the west side <>i Kingstree, nearly half a mile distant from the dispensary. Mr. ibiutta says he went on to awake Mr. fl. O. Britton, the county j .iler and also clerk of the board of control of thin county. Stutts recited everything to him, and then went on to aronse Mr Lemon * horn he found drunk in bed, aiiJ being unable to arouse him, then went back home, and he and Mr. Player stayed there until daylight, when Mr. Britton came a.>d ordered dispensary closed. He had not de posited any money for about tw< weeks and up to a short tim< ago he had been depositing hi: money in the safe of Messrs Hiller A Co., which made it por fectly safe. The county treas urer states that Mr. Player's bon< expired about the 15th of Decern her, and he promptly notifiei H. O. Britton, clerk of the board and Mr. Britton states that h< I promptly notified the state boan of control, that Mr. Player n? without bond, and they paid n< | attention. The county board knowing Mr. Player to be withou I bond, quietly let him go on actini dispenser, in the full dischargi I of Mi duties. To say the 1ms of this, it amounts to almos 'criminal carelessness, and th< sentiment of tho pooplo deinanc at least the prompt removal o the board, as by this act alom they have shown their unfitnesi for filling any such important business positions. Mr. Stilltn hayh that he is confi dent that ho knows tho four incu who robbed tho dispensary that ho has no proof but tha ono of tho men wor a peculiar kind of mackintosh coat th a gave him dead away If tins wholesale robbery b< allowed to pass unnoticed as ha: been done in the ease of even other robbery conneoted wit) the dispensary here, the pooph will vote to put it out of town The graded school is almo? wholly run I>3* the profits of th< dispensary at this place, and i the town wore to lose this monej it would cause tho school to b< closed one year or longer. Cnpt. W. II. Kennedy, mayoi of Kingstree, has tried tinu after time to get Mr. Player t< deposit the dispensary money, ai the law requires, once a week with the county treasurer, bu without avail, as it seems tha he deposited when he pleased Mayor Kennedy further statei that he appealed to Mr. Britton who is manager for the hoard to help him to get Player to do posit the money, but was giver no satisfaction. The count] treasurer, R I). Rollins, statei that he also advised Mr. Playei to l e more retrular in donnsitint o i r money. Mr. Player had de posited only $285 during tin month of December. It is no known how much the shortag< will aggregate, probably $1,80( or may be as much as $3,000.
