' LANCASTER ENTERPRISE, 1; Published tvary Wednesday and Saturday BY Tto. Enterprise Publishing Company A. J. CLARK Editor. One Year $1.00 Six Months 50 cts . Three Months 25 cts 1 ( In Advance. , 1 Wednesday, Oct. 3, 1900. t t An offer of 10 per cent in- ' crease in wages has been made \ to the coal mine strikers, but it a has not yet been accepted. c ===== t Over 2,000 bales of cotton wore marketed here during the month of September, unusually largo for that month. \ Mr. W. P. Plyler of Water- ? loo, JN. (J., was in town yester- a day with cotton. He says lie is j at least $3.00 better oft' by sell- j ing his cotton in Lancaster * instead of Monroe. He and a t lot of his neighbors will be down " probably next week with 100 * brles. So much for Lancaster's t cotton market. ? J THEN AND NOWBy way of comparison we re- * produce somo market ligures published in the Enterprise of ( Oct. 8, 1898: "Cotton on this ? market brought 5.10 to 5.15 yes- 1 terday and there were orer 400 bales marketed here." The provailing price in surrounding towns was 4.87i to 4.00. It will 1)0 remembered that the staple brought more in Lancaster that l season (two years ago) than < most other markets, owing to a 1 rivalry between the buyers. 1 ===== , Reports from the colleges of this State show an unusually 1 large attendance upon almost all of them this fall. Furman University has 200 students, the South Carolina college 200, , Wofford is almost full, Clemson 1 and Wintlirop are full to their 1 utmost limit, The Greenville 1 female college is well Filled and the two female colleges in Columbia have all they can accom- , mod a to. Just what this large ( attendance upon our colleges is < attributable to, whether it is the 1 jtrice of cotton or what it is is < uncertain, but the large attend- j ance is exceedingly gratifying 1 to all friends of liierher educa o " tion. 1 EdMor'it Awful PIIkIiI. i F. M. digging, Editor Seneca, (I lis.) 1 News, was aillicted for years with Piles that no doctor or remedy helped until he tried Bucklen's Arnica Salve. The Lancaster County Alliance will meet in the courthouse on Friday, October 12. We have been very busy with the work of the political campaign, and ? have not had much time to devote c to alliance work, but hope that c( other alliancemen have been do i iug some good work. In this day * of organization it is of vast im- t portance that the farmers have a i compact organization. We have J the alliance already in force. It is the best order the south has ever had and should be kept up. The State Exchange is to be re organized sometime during this month, and wo should be ready 1 to use it. We aro surprised i oftentimes to see how our people . neglect the alliance and seem to forget that we have an organi/.a- { tion at all, and will listen to the ( opinions of outsiders about politics ruining the alliance, and get over on the other side and work ' with those who have always worked against the alliance and < reform. We say we are surprised, , and we are. It may be human , nature, but I say it is human na tore being led into things without 1 thinking where they are going, * and it is the duty of alliancemen h 0 keep up with the times, keep posted always ; see the right way first, and then for the good of the alliance* We would urge alliance men to look arouud and see whither we aro drifting, and let all the sub alliances hold meetngs, elect delega.^s to the coun !,y meeting on October 12, and et us have a good meeting. Some >f the sub alliances are always lp to date and are benefitted. I'hey save money by buying hrough the Exchange, and then he social features are of inesti nable value. We are busy now veighing cotton and have but ittle lime to write, but we are inxious to see the alliance tako m new life and go to work to mild up the order. J. F. NISBKT. ROnilED THE ORATE. Grandin, the popular druggist of Ontario, N. Y. "She was disappointed and wanted to know what cough preparation I could recommend. 1 said to her that I could freely recommend Chambeslain's Cough Remedy and that she could take a bottle of the remedy and after giving it a fair trial if she did not find it worth the money to bring back the bottle and I would refund the price paid. In the coure of a day or two the ladycame back in company with a friend in need of a cough medicine and advised her to buy a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. In accordance with a call made sometime ago, the cotton growers met in the courthouse Monday and discussed at length the plans and purposes of the Cotton Grow era' Protective association, but there being only a few present and for lack of information and that probably the meeting had not been sufficiently advertised, it was decided to postpone the organization until October 15, when it was thought we would be able to get a better attendance and more information on the subject. And now we would urge farmers, merchants, bankers and all others interested, to be pres ent at the courthouse on Monday, October 15, at 12 o'clock m, for the purpose of organizing the Cotton Growers' Protective asso ciation. Lancaster Enterprise: Mr. Editor in the last issue of your paper you kindly let us know how and by whom jurors are drawn, by the clerk of the court, auditor and treasurer. Would it not be well to have the Governor appoint some disereet man to act with officers, as chairman of the board of jury commissioners, a man who would not cater to certain persons, in certain sections of our county, in order to perpetuate himsell in office but one who would see that all good men are treated alike. It is not reasonable to suppose that men elected to office, by the people whose duty it is to draw the jury, would put many men's names in the jury box, who vote against them when they could just as easily put the names of their friends in the box. There arc plenty of good men in the county who have never been drawn as jurors while there are other.6 living near them, who are nc better qualified, and yet hav often been drawn. Citizen.
