A Soldier Writes Home Telling ot Arms Being Smuggled Into the Filipinos by American Manufacturers? The Troops Tired ot the War. A private letter has been received in this city from a South Carolina boy who is with United States troops in the Philippines, in which he tells of the smug gling of arms ammunition from this country to the Filipinos. This fact was denied some time ago. The correspondent says, however, that he was present when a great box, which had been carefully marked "machinery," was being transferred to a dray, and in the moving the box fell and was broken open. In stead of holding machinery it contained about 100 rifles and a great quantity of ammunition. rru~ ??.,? ? _ a. tic otuu w an ouiu^^ivvi 111 i\;i ?i u ? A i hl :i: z i iirin hi me x umppiues aim was sent from this country. In order to get the arms from the insurgents the government of the United States offered $15 each for all the guns which were surrendered, and every old shooting iron on the islands was turn ed in for the ransom. The insurgents were willing enough to give up their arms when they could buy new and improved rifles for less money than the government allowed them for the old ones. The writer of the letter said that the war in the Philippines, in his opinion, was nothing more nor less than a political struggle and that it could be ended on mighty short notice if the United States wanted to do it. The sol diers, he said, were tiled of the dull warfare and wanted to see the thing ended.?News and Courier. Very Low Rates to Chicago and , Return. National encampmc lit, G. A.
