SI Winnsboro, July 17.?This morning, between 4 end 5 o'clock, at the Winnsboro hotel, the screems of a woman aroused those sleeping near her and caused the would be perpetrator of a dastardly crime to flee for his life. The young woman was Miss Sadie Shutter, of Pennsylvania, and was here at the hotel with the family of Mr. Ely, who hits just come here to opeu a business school for the next few weeks, and who has a suite of rooms on the third floor of the hotel, where his family sleep and do their own cooking. When she went to bed last night she left the door between her room and the room next to her open, and it was through this vacant room that the negro entered. On entering her room he found that it w.*t very light and to made a screen over the window to darker the room, though at such an houi this was not sufficient to shut out all light. Miss Shuster wai awakened by his touching her oho gcresmeu inu n? mo, nei brother in-law was then called upon to catch the negro. Fortunately Policeman Gilbert wai near the hotel when the vomit screamed and was on the watch out for some one to copper. H< aw the negro come out the side door and immediately called tc him to stop. On his refusal to dc so he followed him, firing foui times, without effect. 0e"6btv tinned to follow, hein* iiahi enough to recognise bim an Ed Ballard, alias Buster Ballard, a mulatto about 18 years old, who had worked around the hotel a few days before and had been in the prisoners'dock at least twice. Mr. Garrison, by whom the negro passed closely, also recognized him. He was pursued in a circuit around the town and was finally caught at the passenger depot, where he pretended he had stayed aJl night, though those that were there had not seen him till a few. minutes before. When crught and before questioned he said he had not done it. Police man Gilbert at once took him to the hotel, where the young lady identified him. saying, "that is the man." Rumors of lynching Ballard were afloat this morning before 0 o'clock. Sheriff Ellison at once decided to carry him to the penitentiary for sate keeping. At 10 o'clock, just a few minutes before the down train was to arrive, he started off with his deputy for A A A A A A A A A A A OUR AIL | NEW 1 T A HE FINE.
