Winnsboro, July 17.?This

at the Winnsboro hotel, the
screems of a woman aroused
those sleeping near her and
caused the would be perpetrator
of a dastardly crime to flee for his
life. The young woman was Miss
Sadie Shutter, of Pennsylvania,
and was here at the hotel with
the family of Mr. Ely, who hits

weeks, and who has a suite of
rooms on the third floor of the
hotel, where his family sleep and
do their own cooking. When she
went to bed last night she left the
door between her room and the
room next to her open, and it
was through this vacant room
that the negro entered. On entering
her room he found that it

had worked around the hotel a

the prisoners'dock at least twice.
Mr. Garrison, by whom the negro
passed closely, also recognized
him. He was pursued in a circuit
around the town and was finally
caught at the passenger depot,
where he pretended he had stayed
aJl night, though those that
were there had not seen him till
a few. minutes before. When

said he had not done it. Police

the hotel, where the young lady
identified him. saying, "that is

Rumors of lynching Ballard

By J. Henry Therrell, M A. L.
Mover talk of heart aches,
Oh hold your head high;
