There was an undercurrent ol excitement on the streets ol Yorkville last Saturday night when it was known that the sheriff had actually closed the doors ol the (ianson Dry Goods Co. about 7 o'clock that evening. There had been lor quite awhile rumors ol an iinpeudiug crash, but those who had heard it and were interested enough to give the matter a second thought hoped the concern would be able to tide over its troubles and continue in business. But late had decreed otherwise. The firm owed in round numbers $18,000, and some of the creditors were beginning to press hard (or their claims. One of the cheif claims was that of the Commercial and Farmer's Bank, of Rock Hill, with whom it had carried an account and ol whom it had borrowed money. 1'he bank failed about two weeks ago, and many say this is indi rectly responsible for the crisis in the affairs of the mercantile concern. The bank claims indebtedness against the Ganson Dry Goods Company of $9,500, with a credit of $2,500, reducing the amount to $0000. The dry goods company, however claims an error in accounts; that they owed $9,500 by note, and when $2,500 was sent down to be placed on deposit, ! it was, without its consent, and contrary to its wish, credited on the note; that they owe the bank, therefore, $0,500, and should have to their credit on checking or open account #2,500. At tirst sight" this would to the ordinary layman appear to lie a distinction without a difference; but in tact there is quite, a dilference, especially in case o! assignment, because if the hank should pay its depositors a hundred cents on the dollar, or anything like it, and the dry goods company had to its credit the amount claimed, i lie bank would have t > pav over this ! McDow, Esq , attorney, appeared before Judge Benet, now holding court at Camden, on last Saturday claiming in part what has been here recited and ashed that a re ceiver be appointed lo take charge of the business and wind up its affairs in the interest of the credi tors. Judge Benet granted the prayer of the petition, and appointed Mr. B. N. Moore, ol Yorkville, temporary receiver, and also issued an order that on February ? he would hear argument and reasons, if any there be, why the order should not be made permanent. As soon as it became known that the appointment of a receiver, in the person of Mr. B. N. Moore, had been made, Ceo. W. S. Ilart, Esq., of Yorkville, repre senting a number of large cred liors, asKed lor an injunction restraining Mr. Moore until argu ( ment. could be heard asking for the appointment of a corecoiver, some of the interests being diverse. This argument was heard by Judge Gage, at chambers, at Chester, yesterday. Six clerks were thrown out of employment by the closing of this store, and the failure will hurt the town in many ways, as it was the largest business house in the place. Having a nominal capital stock of $20,000, they claimed assets in the neighborhood of #40,000, and owed in round numbers about $1S,000. The impression has gained some currency that, a good deal of the assets of the concern are scattered in the country in the shape of accounts, but this is doubtless erroneous, as the concern was supposed to do business almost solely for cash. I At one time this house did a magnificent business, running up to nearly $100,000 a year, with a clean net profit, it is stated by those in a position to know, of $13,000 for the first year. But sales had fallen off recently, until the last year's business was only a little in excess of $50,000. The live, pushing and aggressive business methods employed by the firm when it first opened here were a marvel to those who had 1 not dreamed of the possibilities of "push, pluck, perseverence,"' and the liberal use of printers' link. It drew trade tor mile? and' iniles. arid from adjoining towns,; ; gave many genuine bargains, and made money handover list. Mr. {Jones, the manager, was pointed out by those who viewed success as a criterion in lite. 1 >ut the beautiful picture is turned to the wall; phenomenal suecess has been tot lowed by i crushing disaster.
