;ra.. ; . " -1' * LAN i VOL. IX. ~~~ BLUNDERS OF THE BRITISH. GEN. LOIID WOLNELEY'S CONFESS10N OF IGNORANCE. The War Office in London Utterly Uninformed or Misinformed in Regard to the Strength and Efficiency ot the Boer Army. London, November 7.?The confession last evening of Gen. Lord Wolseley, the commander inchief, that the Boers were more powerful and more numerous than had been anticipated suffi ciently explains the present hap penings, and the war office will t-* hereafter have awkward questions to answer in regard to its apparent colosal ignorance of the Boer strength, which in numbers of men and excellence of artillery is apparently a complete surprise to the British military authorities. Mail news from South Afri ca snows now inaccurate have been the estimates of the intelligence department and the governmental experts. It is gleaned therefrom that a fair estimate of the Boer forces is as follows: Around Ladysmith 25,000, traversing Zululand 4,000. advancing on Burghersdorp 5,000, Oolesburg 3,000, Kimberley 7.000, Mafeking 4,500 aud on the Northern Transvaal border 2,000. Exact information ebout the Boer artillery is lacking, but it is known that Gen. Joubert's detachment, be ^ fore it was reinforced, consisted of sixteen Krupp field pieces of latest pattern and two heavy (Jreuzot siege guns, which, but for the opportune arrival of the British naval brigade, would have rendered Ladysmith untenable. In connection with the naval guns the most interesting and important experiment has been successfully carried out at Cape Town with a 4.7-inch gun, so serviceable at Ladysmith. One of the British cruiser Terrible's guns, mounted on a Scott traveling carriage, was fired in the same way I -1 - as h iiem gun with entire success. The Terrible, with a number of guns thus monnted, is on her way to Durban, and though the guns y cannot reach Ladysmith, they may be of the greatest value in j the defence of Pietermaritzburg I, which, it seems, will probably 4 have to stand a soige. The arrival of the Terrible with the relief crews from China and other avil J able men must have placed in the I neighborhood of 3,000 more men at the service of t ie military authorities. Interesting news comes from the Channel squadron at Gibraltar, showing precautions, against all eventualities almost No Right to Ugliness. November 4.?A dispatch which has been received here from Kimberlev, dated November 1, says : "Apparently the Boer reinforcements fnr Mafobin<rhono arrived, as the burghers are more numerous and closer all around Kimberley. About 1,200 of them made a demonstration three miles eastward at Premier Mine to-day aud opened fire on the Pebers carts, but no damage was done. The explosion of the dynamite maga zin<>, caused by the Boers' fire, was terrific. The huts contained twenty-five tons of dynamite, valued at 3,500 pounds. All the wounded are progressing satisfactorily. DETAILS OF FRIDAY'S FIGHT. Estcourt, Natal, November 5.? Evening. It is now possible to lurmsn omciai details or Friday's fighting around Ladvsmitb. The Boer artillery fire was accurate and well sustained, but ineffective. The British cavalry was constantly out, the investment not being close enough to prevent this. Cavalry artillery, under Col. Brockleh irst, about noon, drove the enemy toward Maritzburg. Our artillery shelled three of the enemy's guns into silence. The British casualties were verv slight. The Boers are now shelling the town. Their artillery is well handled, but doing little damage. The Boers profited by a llag of truce on Thursday, the 3rd, to send in a Transvaal artillery o Hi cer, disguised as an ambulance driver, with the wounded, to observe the action of the Boer artillery fire. That is a ques tion I am very frequentasked and I suppose it is natural for people to suppose that from my peculiar facilities for observation in the island I might have some knowl edge, or at least some opinion about it. "Nevertheless I have no such knowledge and no such opinion. With the v ry best of will on the part of our Government, a desire to keeD its pledges and leave the inhabitants of Cuba to enjoy their independence in their own way, there are many difficulties in the way of withdrawal, and whether or not we have in the last six months made progress toward the end I am unable to say. "Yet I can say that during the last six months crime has decreased. and peace and prosperity are spreading or reviving in a great measure. This, however, seems attributable to the presence of the United States, whom the chief property holders and conservative business men insist must stay. The Cubans themselves seem to be very much divided in opinion as to what ought to ho done. Some want, an independent republic immediately. Others insist that Cuba should be annexed to the United States ami great numbers of others seem to have no positive opinions concerning the path their country should pu rsue.
