Killed by A. J. Pitt num. Charleston, Oct. 18.?N. T. 1'ittman, a well to do and prominent merchant of Uourdin's Station, was shot to death this afternoon by his brother, A. J. I'ittman. The killing occurred about 1 o'clock, in the reading room nt the Hotel Calhoun, which is in the rear of the office. The trouble that led up to the trageded ia not fully known, hut from what was learned shortly alter the killing it is supposed that either money matters or an tin pleasant family affair was the cause that led to the shooting There were no eye witnesses to the shooting, and just what fook place in the reading room h** tween the dead man and l.is brother cannot he stated. Thev were the only occupants of the room and had been for some lit tie time, having gone there, pie sumably, to discuss business mat fern. The curtains of the reading room, ivhi?*ti shut our the view from the office, were par'lv dra vn, though the two tneu could he Been, witting down in chairs, talk ing together, but their presence in the room attracted no ntten Hon whatever, and their conversation wan held in an ordinary conversational tone and did not foretell of the tragedy that took place. Suddenly the attention of Mr. Guy A. Sroner, the manager of the hotel, was attracted by the re port of a pistol, followed in quick succession by four more shots, all of which came from the writing room. Manager Stoner turned Pittman over to Police Oflicer buby, who sent him to the station house. Mr. Pittman did not appear to be much excited, but for a a man who had just, killed his brother, was remarkable cool and colloct ed. The only statement that he would make was that he did not care to know the result; that he did it in self-defense. The pintol witli which ho fired tile fatal shots was a new Smith <fc Wesson, 32 calibre. All the shells in the weapon had been discharged. Coroner Rivers and Deputy Coroner Warning were notified aod they took charge of the body at once.
