Since his arrival in New York it has B been currently rumored here that the Admiral is engaged to Mrs. . Hazen, the widow ot Gen. Ilazen, a sister of John R. McLean, and daughter of Mrs. Washington McLean, at whose residence the Ad a miral will stay while in Washing\ ton this week. J g It was to be expected that the 5 Admiral's name would be linked * with that of some lady, and the ) i report now circulated in Wash ington possibly may have some s foundation. The fact is regarded as a signpost that the Admiral has refused all other invitations T of private individuals to be their guests during his stay here and accepted Mrs. McLean's. It is said the Admiral and Mrs. Mce Lean are old friends, but inti mates that the Admiral never ^ I heard of any groat friendship he 1 tween the two until it was asu siulied as the reason tor the Ad , mirals making his quarters at the McLean house on lv street. 1 I Several months ago the AdI miral was reported to have been I) engaged to another lady in Wash ington, tnit this report seemed t No Right to Ugliness. Mrs. liazen, to whom he is now said to be engaged, is a striking widow, wealthy, and one of the society leaders of the city. It was at one time said IT 1 ? ?I? <-< mi. ucrueri., wuen oecreiary oi the Navy, was engaged to her. Mrs. Bugher was not only rieh, but very attractive personally. Uapt. Ludlow was an officer of striking apperrance, and like Admiral Dewey, a widower. During his residence here the Admiral was closely identified with the exclusive circles of society, hut not until after the battle of Manilla Bay were rumors started that tie might marry again. The Admiral has been a widower now for twenty years. As Admiral of the navy Dewey holds a position scarcely second to any except the President. It is one, too, of leisure and assured service always in Washington, with but little more to do than make an annual report to the Secretary. At least that is all Admiral Porter did. With a fine house presented to him by the people of the country, and a salary approaching $15,000, Admiral Dewey may be regarded as a ucatch," and a man that perhaps few widows, no matter how eligible, would decline. He is not quite 62 years of age, fine looking, vigorous and accustomed to polite society. It is quite certain the Admiral will not be let alone by matchmakers and eossios. and his nam? will he connected in the matrimonial line with someone until he is either married or society abandons hope of getting him married.
